PROPOSED PLAN FOR THE ADMISSION OF
POST-BACCALAUREATE UNCLASSIFIED APPLICANTS
ACADEMIC SENATE POLICY S79-45
At its meeting of April 17,
1979, the Academic Senate approved the proposed plan for the admission of
post-baccalaureate unclassified applicants:
1. Persons
applying for admission as unclassified graduate students will make application
directly to the Admissions Office as do all other graduate applicants.
2. Unclassified
graduate applicants, like classified graduate applicants, will be required to
submit transcripts of previous college work, which will verify the award of the
baccalaureate degree, and identify the last 60 units of college work attempted.
3. The
Admissions Office will evaluate the applicant's transcripts to determine whether
or not a 2.5 grade point average has been earned in the last 60 units
attempted. If the evaluation shows
that the 2.5 GPA has been earned in the last 60 units attempted and the
applicant was in good standing at the last institution attended, the applicant
will be admitted. If either
condition is lacking, the applicant will be denied admission.
4. To
further control unclassified graduate admissions, a column titled
"Unclassified Grads" will be added on the form by which the School
Deans set their graduate quotas.
This will permit the College Deans to identify those disciplines in
which they want a zero quota for unclassified graduates.
The
Admissions Office will review block 20, part "B" on all unclassified
graduate applicants and, in those cases where the course work designated by the
applicants is in an area which has been designated a "zero" area by
the School Deans, the application will be returned. In those cases where the student fails to fill in block 20,
part "B", the application will be returned for completion.
5. Unclassified
graduate students other than credential candidates will be programmed to go
through CAR last so that unclassified graduate students cannot take class space
away from classified students.
6. By
a footnote in the Class Schedule, the departments may designate those courses
in which students other than classified graduate students may enroll on a space
available only basis, as determined at the first class meeting.
7. All
classified graduate students whose applications have been forwarded by the
Admissions Office to departments for final recommendation, but have not been
returned by August 1 or January 1, will be admitted in unclassified graduate
standing. Those admitted will be
informed that the department may convert the unclassified admission to
classified standing during the first semester of attendance if the student
provides the department with appropriate documentation as requested by the
department and receives department approval. Exceptions will be made for individual programs at the
request of the department.
8. At
the end of the Fall 1979 semester and each semester subsequent thereto, a
report will be produced on the unclassified graduate students, identifying the
units attempted, units completed and grade point earned. With this being a continuous report
each semester, the Graduate Division and departments will be able to monitor
unclassified graduate admissions and examine actual enrollment practices
throughout the University.
9. A
second report will be produced as soon as possible following census date,
identifying for each college dean the courses in each of the college's
departments that are being undertaken by unclassified graduates. This report will be only for the
semester in which it is produced.
It will not be cumulative.
