REQUIREMENT IN U.S. HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT
ACADEMIC SENATE POLICY F84-125
Superseded by F10-255 (PDF)
At its meeting of November 27, 1984, the Academic Senate approved the following policy requirement in U.S. History and Government:
Intelligent citizenship requires an understanding of the history and government of the United States. The California State University system has established knowledge requirements in U.S. History, the Constitution and American ideals, and California state and local government. The following policy is intended to implement CSU requirements in this area, as defined in Title 5 and in Executive Order.
| 1. |
This requirement may be met by examination. Academic credit is not awarded for successful completion of the examination(s), but successful completion of the examination(s) will fully satisfy this requirement. |
| 2. |
The requirement may also be met by taking a total of six units of coursework. Students satisfying the requirement by submitting coursework rather than taking the examination(s) must submit three units of work which centrally addresses the historical development of American institutions and ideals and also three units of work which centrally addresses the Constitution of the United States, the operation of representative democratic government under that Constitution, and the process of California state and local government. The requirement may be met, alternatively, by an integrated approach involving a total of six units of which addresses the historical development of American institutions and ideals, the Constitution of the United States, the operation of representative democratic government under that Constitution, and the process of California state and local government. |

This advisory committee shall review the proposed courses or revisions and shall make recommendations to the two Deans, who shall forward the recommendations in which they concur to the Provost. |
| c. |
Should the two Deans disagree with the recommendations of the advisory committee, or should the two Deans not agree with each other regarding recommendations, the matter shall be referred to the Educational Policies Council (or the successor) of the Academic Senate for adjudication, and the EPC will forward its recommendations directly to the Provost. |
*If the chairperson of a department represented on the advisory committee believes another department member possesses greater familiarity with the subject matter, she/he should appoint the more expert person as the department's designee on the advisory committee.
