Request to Change Requirements for an Existing Graduate Program

1. Identify the following:

a.  College - COLLEGE OF CREATIVE ARTS

b.  Department/Program Area - ART DEPARTMENT/MASTER OF ARTS IN ART

c.  Contact Persons - JUDITH BETTELHEIM, SYLVIA S. WALTERS

2. Proposed Changes and Rationale

a.  Define specialization in the "Art of Asia"

b.   Define specialization in "Art of the Spanish-speaking World (including Spain and Latin   America)"

A wide range of courses in both areas of study already exists. The department wishes to formalize these courses by grouping  them into clusters for informational purposes  for  prospective students.

A search for a tenure-track art historian to teach in the area of Asian Art History was approved for the 2003-04 academic year. Dr. Santhi Kavuri-Bauer, a specialist in Asian Art, was hired Fall 2003 and is now teaching courses in this area. Courses related to the Spanish-speaking world are being offered by Professors J. Bettelheim and R. Mann.

 c. Add one new core course (Art 703 Art History Research Applications) to the curriculum and reduce the required elective options from 6 to 3 units total. The number of units required to graduate would remain the same.

The new course (Art 703 Art History Research Applications) is a prerequisite for ART 898.  In this seminar, students will develop research and writing skills specifically applicable to the preparation of a thesis paper.  A rough draft of the thesis paper would be prepared as part of the course requirements.

This request for change is based on the fact that requiring our students to produce an MA thesis independently of a structured seminar situation has led the majority of our students to take three to five semesters, or more, to complete the current thesis requirement which is described in the program to take one to two semesters.  We believe that a dedicated seminar in thesis preparation will enable students to graduate in a more timely fashion, will relieve some of the burden of extended advising and thesis supervision that the faculty is now assuming, and will enable the department to accept and work with a more regular flow of students into the program.

3. How will Changes Affect Enrollment patterns, FTE and Resources

These proposed changes will only affect the numbers of students entering the program as described above.  We currently have ten students in the M.A. program; the addition of another tenure-track position in art history will enable us to expand modestly.  We anticipate an intensified recruitment program to familiarize potential applicants with new area of focus in the Art of Asia.
