Introduction

The Mission of the Design and Industry (DAI) Department is to offer a strong, well-rounded, interdisciplinary education to a diverse population with an emphasis in Interdisciplinary Studies, Industrial Technology, Product Design and Development  and Visual Communication Design. The DAI program prepares students to make valuable contributions to their fields through communication, innovation, function, management and production. The department strives for a global approach towards design that includes social, ethical and environmental responsibility.

The DAI department currently offers the Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts (BAIA), as well as the Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts with concentrations in Product Design and Development, and in Visual Communication Design. The department also offers a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology (BSIT) degree, which is a management-oriented technical curriculum built upon a program of studies drawn from Design and Industry, Decision Sciences, Information Systems, Mathematics, and Management. This degree prepares students across a broad variety of technical industries relative to Product Development & Management; Electronics Technology; and Graphic Communication.

Major degree program enrollment figures for the DAI department, as of Fall 2007,                     were as follows:

·     Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts Interdisciplinary: 264

·     Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts Concentration in Product Design and Development: 159

·     Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts Concentration in Visual Communication Design: 68                                                                                                                           Total BAIA Majors: 491

·     Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology: 36

·     The department also offers a Master of Arts in Industrial Arts, with an active enrollment of 51 students. (Approximately 600+ active students in the DAI department, if you take into account undeclared/non- majors)

Background

The curriculum revisions proposed here are consistent with the DAI department’s Academic Program Review in 2004 and the department’s Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) approved by the University on October 17th, 2005. As a result of these academic measures the DAI department developed and implemented a curriculum development plan that has been structured into two phases. In Phase 1, the Academic Senate approved the Bachelor of Arts in Industrial Arts (BAIA) curriculum revision in Spring of 2006. At that time the DAI department restructured the curriculum using existing courses and added a new concentration in Visual Communication Design.

Based on the outcome of Academic Program Review in 2004 and the DAI Department’s

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU), which was approved by the university on

September 23rd, 2005, the department outlined the following Curriculum Development action

plans which were excerpted from the DAI MOU:

1.    Consider a change in the titles of both the bachelor’s and the master’s programs to more

accurately reflect the department’s emphasis on design and to align the department with current

developments within the field

2.    Proceed expeditiously to develop a proposal to revise both the BSIT and the BAIA degrees,

including t
