Statewide Senators will be presenting an up-date on the Statewide Senate meeting.

AGENDA ITEM #5: PROPOSAL FOR A MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATION: CONCENTRATION IN LANGUAGE AND LITERACY EDUCATION: a consent item from the Curriculum Review and Approval Committee (1st reading)

Currently San Francisco State University offers a Master of Arts in Education with a Concentration in Elementary Education, Emphasis in Reading. The purpose of the proposed aggregate of courses is to create a Master of Arts concentration that delivers focused, graduate preparation in the field of language and literacy education at the K-12 and adult education levels. It is based on a set of new and revised courses which reflect the broadening of the literacy field to include oral language, reading, writing and multimedia. Secondly, it provides substantial preparation for teaching linguistically and culturally diverse learners, including theory and methods of teaching English as a second language. Although only a few pages of the proposal are attached (on yellow) to this agenda, a complete set is currently in the Academic Senate office. You are welcome to peruse it in the Senate office.

AGENDA ITEM #6: PROPOSED POLICY ON THE USE OF UNDER-GRADUATES IN THE CLASSROOM: a recommendation from the Academic Policies Committee (1st reading)

Much research, discussion and the involvement of our sister campuses has gone into the development of this proposed policy on the use of undergraduates in the classroom The proposal comes to you with the unanimous endorsement of the Academic Policies Committee. It is not being presented as a consent item so that full discussion can take place in the Senate. (attached on buff)

The Executive Committee of the Academic Senate is setting aside an entire hour during the Senate meeting scheduled for February 25, for the discussion of the Cornerstones initiative. To acquaint you with the initiative, we are attaching material sent to us by the Chancellor's Office which describes the planning process, drawing attention to the several phases of this initiative. The material is attached on white.
