INFORMATION FOR STUDENT EMPLOYEES

Office Workers

Students who work in offices, computer labs, and other areas where few, if any, hazardous materials are used or stored still need to complete a safety orientation. Their immediate supervisor is responsible for making sure student workers have basic safety training and that the required documents are reviewed, signed, and maintained.

Teaching Associates or Assistants

Student employees who teach lecture or laboratory classes need basic safety training usually provided by their class coordinator or as part of the lecturer orientation session at the beginning of the semester.

In addition to this, student teachers are required to review a safety handbook, take the accompanying quiz, and turn it in to their class coordinator or department office. There are two versions available, one for lab instructors and another for lecture class instructors.

Research Assistant and ORSP

Student employees who work in a research situation are required to have basic safety training before they start work or, at the latest, within 30 days of starting work. This training comes in two parts:

  1. Project-specific safety review by the Principal Investigator or Lab Manager
  2. Recall Exercise (Quiz) submitted to the COSE Safety Office (copy should be kept in project records)

Post-Docs and Guest Researchers

Temporary, part-time, and guest or volunteer employees who work in a research situation are required to have basic safety training before they start work or, at the latest, within 30 days of starting work. This training comes in two parts:

  1. Project-specific safety review by the Principal Investigator or Lab Manager
  2. Recall Exercise (Quiz) submitted to the COSE Safety Office (copy should be kept in project records)
