GRADUATE STUDENT ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS POLICY, APPR0VED 10/8/97

JUSTIFICATION

Knowledge and experience in advanced research methods and basic statistical analysis are normally essential for completion of a masters thesis. This policy is designed to ensure that students are well prepared to complete their thesis research and to apply advanced research methods and basic statistical analysis in the workplace.

GRADUATE STUDENT ADVANCED RESEARCH METHODS POLICY

This policy is in effect for students admitted during or after the Fall semester 1998. All graduate students who plan to complete a thesis to satisfy culminating experience requirements must take an advisor approved upper division statistics course, such as PSY371, or advanced research methods class (in addition to REC710), or demonstrate competency in these areas, prior to enrollment approval for REC 898. Students can demonstrate competency by: 1.) Providing a transcript showing the student has passed within the last three years an upper division statistics course or an advanced research methods class; 2.) Providing a signed letter on organization stationary stating that the student has received training and experience in research methods or statistical analysis at this work site, or on previous research projects. It must be from a supervisor who is familiar with the student's experience. The letter must contain a phone number for the person signing so that a SFSU faculty may call to verify student experience. Students choosing to take comprehensive exams, instead of a thesis, do not need to satisfy any advanced research methods competency requirements.
