The Department offers two, Research Assistantships (RA) to newly accepted or current graduate students. These RA opportunities are part-time paid positions designed to help qualified newly-accepted RLS students to get their graduate program off to a good start and conduct accurate research. Prioity is given to newly accepted students. These competitive positions require an application. At-Risk Youth Leadership and Evaluation Research Assistantship; Fall 2008

A one year, part-time, paid Research Assistant (RA) position in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies (RLS) in evaluation of urban adventure recreation programs for at-risk youth will be available in fall 2005. This part time assistantship focuses on field work and field study in urban, community-based adventure recreation at the Department's Pacific Leadership Institute. Responsibilities could include program facilitation with the challenge course staff, leadership at the course, conducting pre and post sessions with school and other groups who participate in the program, collecting and analyzing data to measure the effects and benefits of the program on the one time, multiple and semester long users. This position would provide some leadership training on our challenge courses. The RA applicant must have been accepted to, or currently enrolled in, the RLS Masters Program; have a BA in recreation or related field; have a strong interest or experience in leadership of at-risk youth and program evaluation, have a strong desire to complete a thesis for their culminating experience and some experience in conducting research. Previous experience in leading adventure programs, especially ropes/challenge courses, is preferred. Preference will be given to qualified newly admitted students in the RLS graduate program. Research In Golden Gate National Recreation Area; Fall 2008

The Department is working on securing funding for a one semester part-time, paid Research Assistantship conducting research within Golden Gate National Recreation Area. We hope to have funding confirmed soon. At this point responsibilities would consist of helping to design and conduct focus groups and assessment surveys of park users. The RA applicant must have been accepted to, or currently enrolled in, the RLS Masters Program; have a BA in recreation or related field; have a strong interest or experience in urban national parks, have a strong desire to complete a thesis for their culminating experience and some experience in conducting research.
