The Department has developed this webpage to help persons who are interested in applying to the Recreation Graduate Program.

The prospective student is responsible for meeting all university and department requirements by the application deadlines in order to be considered.  Students will not be admitted to the RPT Graduate Program unless they meet (RPT) graduate admission criteria. The basic application process is, at the same time, to: 

  1. Apply for admittance to SFSU; and
  2. Apply for admittance to the Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Department Graduate Program

A student can apply on-line to SFSU. To apply to the RPT Graduate Program the student must complete and print the fillable application form, acquire necessary additional materials and mail the application packet to the RPT Department.

In addition, applicants must submit a writing sample during the RPT application process. The RPT department will provide directions for the writing sample, after submission of your initial application packet.

Recreation Graduate Program Admission Criteria

Applicants for candidacy for the Master of Science in Recreation must meet all SFSU requirements, as listed on the SFSU application process website and meet the following RPT admission criteria.  Space in the program is limited. 

  1. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or better in the last 60 units of undergraduate classes, or other strong compensating qualifications.
  2. A bachelors degree in recreation or closely related field of study. If student does not have this type of degree, and are accepted, student will be required to take prerequisite classes.
  3. Minimum of one (1) year, or the equivalent, of successful, full time, recent employment in recreation or a closely allied field. Check with the RPT graduate coordinator to determine the applicability of your work experience..
  4. Complete the RPT application.
