 Careers in Community Recreation

As our society continues to grow in complexity, people are increasingly turning to recreation and leisure to enhance their quality of life.  The Community Recreation concentration area is a dynamic and exciting field, and provides the conceptual foundation and professional competencies needed for a career in the leisure service delivery system.  In addition to a set of core courses, students will have an opportunity to develop and strengthen their knowledge and skills through a wide selection of courses ranging from recreation leadership and nonprofit administration to urban recreation and developmental aspects of play. 

In addition to course work, students are required to complete an internship where they will receive hands-on experience and professional training in a community recreation setting.  Students specializing in community recreation will be capable of successfully planning, organizing, managing, and evaluating community recreation programs, and often find careers as leaders, program specialists, supervisors, administrators, managers, and directors in the following professional settings:

       Agency Recreation:
            YWCA                   Senior Centers
            Boy’s & Girl’s Club          Retirement Communities       

        Municipal Recreation
            Community Centers              Museums
            Golf Courses                      Aquatic Centers                          

      School Recreation:
            Intramural sports        After-school programs 
           
Student clubs                     Playgrounds

       Military Bases and governmental recreation facilities:

 

Students interested in working for a nonprofit agency are encouraged to receive an American Humanics Certificate.
