RE: Final Graduate Student Computer
Competency Policy
Below is the revised graduate student
computer competency policy, as amended by the RLS faculty. The goal of
the graduate student computer competency policy is to assist students in
their academic coursework and career development by ensuring graduate students
have the ability to perform basic functions in word processing, spreadsheets,
graphics, email and internet access. Effective Fall semester 1996, all
graduate students must: 1) complete the undergraduate/REC 500 computer
competency requirements (see attached memo); 2) acquire and maintain their
own SFSU or personal email account; 3) demonstrate their ability to access
the world wide web with a graphical browser (like Netscape); and 4) access
the RLS Graduate world wide web page, and complete on-line forms and post
email messages to the RLS Department. The REC 500 computer competency policy
requires taking of a self-administered test, in which you demonstrate word
processing, spreadsheet and graphics (within the spreadsheet program) skills.
If you are an experience computer user your skills may be documented in
the other specific ways outlined in the attached policy. Graduate student
computer competency requirements must be completed before a student can
advance to "classified" status. Students who have just been admitted
as "classified", have until the end of their first semester to
complete competency requirements. Current students are strongly encouraged
to gain equivalent computer skills. For information on the REC 500 computer
competency test or these graduate computer competency requirements see
your advisor or Dr. Tierney in Gym 311.
