Commercial Recreation, Resort and Tourism Management (CRRTM)

This emphasis area has a set of specialized classes and field work sites that provide excellent learning opportunities.   Students completing a specialization in CRTM are qualified for careers in a wide variety of professional settings ranging from privately owned attractions, resorts, event planning companies and local recreation organizations to concessions specialists with public land management agencies.  These professionals utilize skills and CRTM students receive training in topics, such as the travel and tourism system, risk management, tourism motivations and behavior, special events management, impacts of tourism, eco-tourism, incentive travel, tour company operations, conference and meeting management, human resources development, supervision of staff and destination marketing.  Graduating students often find jobs in the following types of businesses. 

·Resorts and Cruise lines: Marketing, management and operations in recreation and guest services departments for resorts, cruise lines and  casinos.
·Travel Arrangers:  Travel agents, tour operators, incentive travel and destination management companies.
·Tour Operators:  Adventure travel guides, tour operators, motor coach tours and tour boats.
·Eco-Tourism Providers:  Outfitters, lodges, parks and protected area agencies providing sustainable minimum impact tourism services in natural settings.
·Theme Parks and Attractions:  Theme parks, festival shopping centers, animal parks and amusement parks.
·Events and Festivals: Meeting planners, event promoters and festival management companies.
·Sports Management:  Professional sports teams, sports leagues, facility management and health clubs.
·Corporate Recreation:  In-house corporate recreation and health programs, team-building consultants, ropes course management.
·Local Commercial Recreation:  Health clubs, bowling alleys, ski shop, dive shop, adventure recreation.
·Concessions Management: Contracting and management of private concessions located on public lands, such as parks and protected areas.
