U.S. HISTORY AND GOVERNMENT REQUIREMENT
The California State University system requires that students develop an informed understanding of the historical development of American institutions and ideals, the Constitution of the United States, the operation of representative democratic government under that Constitution, and the processes of California state and local government. Taking two three-unit courses at SFSU satisfies this requirement. Students select one U.S. History Requirement Courses and and one U.S. Government Requirement Course. The U.S. Government Requirement consists of both U.S. government and California state and local government.
Transfer students from private schools and schools outside of California often do not have a California government class and will therefore need to take a third course (List C) to complete the California state and local government requirement. Check the ASE or DARS for verification of completion of the entire requirement.

Segment 1: Basic Subjects (12 Units)
All students must complete a minimum of twelve units in Segment I: Written Communication, Oral Communication, Critical Thinking, and Quantitative Reasoning. Check below for the Raza Studies courses that satisfy the Written Communication and Critical Thinking portions of Segment I.

- In each Segment II Area, students must complete nine units and satisfy specific category requirements for the Area.
- In each Segment II Area, students must select courses from at least two different departments. Alternately, at least three units of the nine-unit minimum must have a different departmental prefix.
- Within Segment II, students must complete one course that fulfills the American Ethnic and Racial Minorities (AERM) requirement and one course that fulfills the Lifelong Development (LLD) requirement.
TRANSFER STUDENT REQUIREMENTS
- In each Segment II Area, students must complete nine units and are not held to category requirements within each Area, except as specified in the Physical and Biological Sciences Area.
- Within each Segment II Area, students must select courses from at least two different departments. Alternately, at least three units of the nine-unit minimum must have a different departmental prefix.
- Within Segment II, students must complete one course that fulfills the Lifelong Development (LLD) requirement.
- A minimum of 27 units is required in Segment II. Students on the six-unit system pattern for the Physical and Biological Sciences Area must make up any unit deficiencies by selecting courses in Segment II.

SEGMENT III: RELATIONSHIPS OF KNOWLEDGE (9 units)
General requirements for satisfying the Segment III requirement.
- Complete at least nine units of upper division course work in residence at SFSU in one of the Segment III clusters listed below.
- Begin their Segment III course work during or after the semester in which upper division junior standing is achieved (i.e., 60 semester units), but NOT before.
- Begin their Segment III course work only after completing all General Education Segment I requirements.
- Meet all of the cluster's specific requirements.
- Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that is both outside the major department and outside the major program submitted on the student's Application for Graduation.
- Complete at least one course in the Segment III cluster that fulfills the Cultural, Ethnic, and Social Diversity (CESD) Requirement.
