Continuing Education
SF State's College
of Extended
Learning (CEL) is a self-supporting college that extends San
Francisco State University more deeply into the Bay Area community.
It offers academic certificates,
professional development programs, individual credit and non-credit
courses,
and access to SF State courses through Open
University. Last year some 22,000 people took classes through
CEL. The College offers weekend courses, intensive workshops, online
courses, and other flexible scheduling options at times the main
University campus is not in session.

What office handles continuing
education at
SF State?
The College of Extended Learning oversees
continuing education, extension classes, certificate programs and
special sessions for San Francisco State.
Who are College of Extended Learning classes
for?
CEL students are degree-seeking SF State students,
working professionals, students who have completed their formal
education, students wanting to take a program that is not offered as
a degree (such as CEL's internationally recognized
Multimedia
Studies Program), and the general public. The College offers
academic units, continuing education units, online classes, and
non-credit courses.
Where are classes held?
CEL
classes are held at two locations: the main
SF State campus, 1600 Holloway Ave., San Francisco, and the SF State Downtown
Campus, 835
Market Street, 6th Floor, San Francisco.
Who are its faculty?
CEL has no
permanent faculty but instead relies on
a combination of campus faculty and expert practitioners from the
community. Because it can offer programs to meet the demands of the
marketplace, it has the capacity to create and deliver opportunities
for learning that are high quality, reasonably priced and accessible
to a broad segment of the larger community.
How can I get a catalog or learn more about
CEL?
CEL publishes and distributes four catalogs a
year, for fall and spring programs, and for summer and winter
classes. Check out CEL's Web
site or e-mail for information.
CEL can also be reached by phone at (415) 405-7700.
