Alumni and Friends of Philosophy

College of Humanities

Dear SFSU PHILOSOPHY and PHILOSOPHY AND RELIGION Graduates and Friends,

The SFSU Philosophy Department is being reinvigorated. Our faculty is expanding. Professors who are internationally recognized for their exciting work on diverse topics have joined the department. We think you´ll be happy to be associated with the renaissance in Philosophy at SFSU and thus invite you to sign onto our new mailing list.

You´ll be associated with a department of more than 200 majors and graduate students in the two undergraduate and the M.A. programs. Philosophy enjoys a growing presence in higher education around the world, as described in the New York Times - April 6, 2008, and with employers (see, for example, The Guardian - Nov. 20, 2007.

We also have initiated a renaissance in Public Philosophy Events and are scheduling conferences, lectures, and receptions, in which we hope you´ll enjoy participating, either in person or else through our forthcoming website Newsletter and Philosophy Talks.

We remain devoted to our special missions to enable promising students, especially those whose circumstances are extraordinarily difficult, to study Philosophy and Philosophy and Religion. More and more students are coming from far away, contributing to our diversity. For example, one graduate student admitted for next fall is a founder of the Philosophy Forum of Nepal. Under daunting financial conditions, he has just made his way to the Bay Area to pursue an MA in philosophy at SFSU and to seek admission to a doctoral program after receiving the MA.

Recent steep raises in tuition, especially for non-California residents, can place education beyond the reach of deserving students like this. We have no tuition waivers and, unlike most other departments, the Philosophy Department has never before raised scholarship funds for such students. We are starting to do so now, and look forward to working with our graduates and friends to help students such as this one.

To associate with the SFSU Philosophy Department and stay in touch, you need only fill out our webpage Contact Form at (put in url). This will take just a minute for you to do, and we then can be back to you with more news, both about our emeriti faculty and alumni, and our new faculty and current students.

Please don´t put off filling in the form and joining us!

Warm Wishes,
Anita Silvers, Professor and Chair
