PHILOSOPHY 101 INTRODUCTION TO PHILOSOPHY COURSE DESCRIPTION

  1. Instructor: Robert Mutti. (Office: HUM 445 [x3138].
  2. Required Reading: Excerpts from Hobbes' Leviathan; Plato's Republic (Penguin Classics edition, tr. by Desmond Lee)
  3. Attendance: As long as there is a waiting list for this course, any student who misses two classes in a row without notifying the instructor will be dropped. Also, since there is very little supplementary material to help students understand the readings, classroom attendance is strongly recommended.

Students who come to class are expected to arrive on time. Students should not leave the classroom during a lecture period without getting the instructor's consent (preferably before class starts).

  4. Course Format: The course will predominately consist of lectures, and answers to questions about the readings.

    All tests--three quizzes, and a final exam--are open-book, open-note, in-class tests.

  5. Grades: The three quizzes are worth a total of 105 points, and the final exam is worth 100 points. Details of the grading scale for the course are available on request. (Roughly, 90% is an "A", 80% a "B", etc.)

A student may miss one quiz (or replace her lowest quiz score) with points pro-rated from the final exam score. Any quiz may be made up (or, possibly, replaced) by following the directions for making up quizzes.

If a student misses the final exam and has not arranged for a grade of "W" or "I", a grade of "F" will result.

Students wishing to exercise the "Credit/No Credit" option must inform the instructor in person, sometime around the fifth or sixth week of class.

PHILOSOPHY 101 - Instructor: Robert Mutti DIRECTIONS FOR MAKING UP (Or Replacing) QUIZZES

(Note: Doing this work is not a guarantee that any quiz score will be replaced. If you do this work, and score higher on it than the score you received on the quiz, then your quiz score will be replaced.)

For each false assertion on the quiz (that is, for each of the 17 or 18 assertions labeled "false" on the answer key), do the following three things:

  1. Write a true assertion which closely paraphrases what actually is said in the text (as opposed to what is said in the false assertion on the quiz)--and include the marginal page number (e.g.: 438b) where you found this true assertion. (Hopefully, this page number will be the same one I have written on the answer key!)
  2. Write a second true assertion which either is supposed to (help) prove that the first one is true or is supposed to be proved by the first one--and include the marginal page number where you found this second assertion.
  3. Indicate whether the second assertion is supposed to prove the first, or the first is supposed to prove the second, by writing one of the following: "2 --> 1" or "1 --> 2". [Hint: Look for words like 'because' and 'therefore'.]

NOTE: YOU MUST DO YOUR OWN WORK! (If, for example, two assignments are turned in with the same answers, both will receive a grade of "0".)
