Courses

Persian Language 101 (5 units)

First term elementary Modern Persian language course is designed to develop proficiency in the fundamental skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing Persian. Course also offers essential exploration of the geography, history, culture, and religions of the Persian-speaking world, including Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan.


Persian Language 102 (5 units)

This is the second term elementary Modern Persian course designed to further develop proficiency in the fundamental skills of listening, reading, speaking, and writing Persian. By the end of the second semester students are able to read, write, comprehend basic sentences, and better understand Iranian cultures.


Persian Language 103 (5 units)

Third term elementary Modern Persian course designed to advance proficiency in reading and translating basic contemporary modern Persian prose literature. Course enables students to communicate on various basic topics and daily routines, and to further understand Iranian culture and Literature. Students are exposed to more advanced grammar and are also introduced to contemporary poetry, and various styles of writing.


Persian Language 104 (5 units)

As the fourth term elementary Modern Persian the course is designed to further develop and promote fundamental skills of reading and translating contemporary and some classical literature at the intermediate level. Course enables students to comprehend and translate simply constructed poetry and prose. Students are expected to produce scholarly translation of straightforward documents and literatures. This course functions as a preparatory for Intermediate Persian language and literature courses.


PRSN 205 Persian Grammar in Review (3 units)

Course is designed for students who need to further review the basic skills of Persian writing and reading. It is an ideal course for students who have been away from Persian studies for some time.


PRSN 206 Basic Persian Conversation (3 units)

This course is designed primarily for non-native speakers who have completed at least one year of Persian grammar, have the basic skills of writing and reading Persian language, and wish to further improve their oral skills. Focusing on vocabulary enrichment through reading selected literatures and newspapers, students enhance their oral skills and prepare themselves for intermediate conversation and composition courses.


PRSN 216 Intermediate Persian Conversation and Reading (3 units)

Intermediate Conversation is designed to develop students' ability to form strong oral skills with emphasis on pronunciation and practical vocabulary used in various social settings including home, work, travel, and typical formal and informal social settings.


PRSN 305 Advanced Persian Grammar and Composition (3 units)

This is a course in writing for students of Persian language who have completed PRSN 104 or equivalent. Utilizing previous lessons in grammar, syntax, and styles of writing, course prepares students for reading classical and modern Persian literatures. Development of listening, speaking, and cultural knowledge also continues through a wide variety of in class activities.


PRSN 350 Advanced Persian Conversation and Reading (3 units)

In a culturally infused surrounding students are exposed to Iranian news, arts, music, film, food, calendars, holidays, and events. Students further develop conversation and reading skills with a focus on recognizing forms of vernacular speaking.


PRSN 401 Iranian Culture and Identity (3 units)

Course introduces the basics of modern Iranian cultural traditions, including the ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversities within Iranian geographical territories, and in the Diasporas. In a historical context course explores the diverse cultural identity of Iranians through exploring religion as a major theme in the development of Iranian culture and ethnic identity from antiquity to the present, including, but not limited to, languages, and traditions of Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.


PRSN 500 Introduction to Persian Literature (3 units)

Examining the development of poetry and prose in the Persian literature, in different periods and genres, by way of introducing prominent classical and Modern literary works. Advanced knowledge of Persian language is required.


PERS 510 Modern Persian Literature in Translation (3 units)

Taught in English, course examines Iranian cultures, traditions, and religions as major themes in contemporary literature of Iranian writers in Iran and in the Diasporas, including works by Iranian women writers.
