Frequently Asked Questions

Highlighted below are answers to a list of general questions typically received from parents of SF State students. If you have a frequently asked question that is not covered, please contact us. General Questions

Is there a safe alternative to my son or daughter walking alone on campus at night?

To ensure a student’s safe return, the CARE Program provides an escort service 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Students are encouraged to call 415/338-7200 or 8-7200 from any campus phone for free, including the blue-box phones located throughout the campus. A uniformed C.A.R.E. team member or an officer is dispatched to the student as soon as possible. In most instances, the escort will arrive on foot.

Can I order a birthday cake to be delivered to my student?

Chartwells Dining Services, in conjunction with Housing & Residential Services, offers specialty cakes for all occasions. For more information and an order form, visit the Chartwells Dining Services' parents web page, or call 415/338-2849.

How can my student get more involved in campus activities?

With more than 200 student organizations, nearly every possible interest is represented. Student groups are open to all students, though some have a membership selection process or membership requirements. However, most organizations are free of charge. A complete list of student organizations is available from the Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development. In addition, students can actively participate in sports through the Recreation and Intramural Sports Program.

Where can I park when I visit campus on the weekend?

How do I contact my son or daughter in case of emergency?

In case of an emergency such as an immediate family member's death or serious illness, please try to contact your student by his or her cell phone. If he or she cannot be reached, then contact the Registrar's Office at 415/338-2350 or the Office Enrollment Management at 415/338-2163 to identify your student's class schedule. If the student lives on-campus, you can contact Housing & Residential Services at 415/338-1067 to deliver a message to his or her room or apartment.

Whom do I contact about tuition deadlines, fees, payments, or refunds?

Health and Wellness

Will my student be charged for the university medical insurance even if he or she is already covered by another policy?

If you chose not to purchase the campus insurance you must have your insurance company fill out a Health Insurance Affidavit on their letterhead. All international students (F-1 and J-1 visas) and all students living in University housing are required to have health insurance. Refer to the Student Health Services for detailed Health Insurance information, or call 415/338-1251.

What counseling resources are available for students?

Psychiatry Services at the Student Health Services provides licensed psychologists and counselors who are sensitive to the many issues affecting college students. In addition, Counseling & Psychological Services Center is available to students for counseling or psychotherapy.

Housing

How do I know when my student is supposed to move in or move out of the residence halls?

Information and dates for moving in and out of the residence halls for freshmen, transfer students, upperclass students, and graduate students can be found at the Housing & Residential Services online calendar.

What are the rates for the different types of housing accommodations?

Rates for SF State-owned property is available online from the Housing & ResidentialServices.

What types of accommodations are available for students with disabilities?

Our traditional residence halls, suite-style buildings, and apartment buildings contain living environments designed for students who have visible or hidden disabilities, chronic medical conditions, or who are deaf or hard of hearing. To request housing assignments that match your student’s specific needs, he or she must first register with the Disability Programs & Resource Center (DPRC). Contact the DPRC at 415/338-6356 or 415/ 338-2472 (TTY). The DPRC is located at Student Services Building.

Where can I get information on cable, dining, keyless locks, parking, pets, mail delivery, Internet access and e-mail, subleasing policies, and telephone services?

Information on any of these topics can be found online at Housing & Residential Services.

Student Accounts

How can I put money into my child's Gator Dollars account?

Your student can use Gator Dollars to purchase snacks in vending, make photo copy, and purchase groceries, etc. from the Village Market.  You can add Gator dollars to the students account online from Chartwells Dining Services.

Is it possible to change a meal plan if my student decides it doesn’t fit with his or her schedule?

Yes. Students can change their meal plan at the University Housing Business Office before the indicated deadlines with a Change of Meal Plan Request Form. For current deadlines, contact the Housing & Residential Services at 415/338-1067.
