Written Communication Requirement
"Writing is thinking made visible."

Step One - Composition at SFSU

Advisor Tip:

  • If you are exempt from the EPT (English Placement Test), the first course to take is ENG 114.
  • If you are not exempt, and need to take the EPT, you will take any necessary remedial course(s) in Fall and Spring and then take your English 114 course.
  • You should try and finish English 114 in the summer of your 1st year or at the beginning of your 2nd year of college. After that, you'll take a course called English 214, 2nd Year Composition, in your sophmore year.

ENG 114 - First Year Composition

Course Description:

Training in expository-argumentative composition, emphasizing work on clear and effective sentences and the organization and development of paragraph and essay.

Class Format:

Various handouts and readers are given out to read at home; class discussion will come from these materials. Write one paper each week. The instructor will return papers for rewriting if needed (most students do have to do rewrites).

Homework:

Usually four to five hours per week.

Student Comments About This Course:
  • This class will require a lot of intense reading and writing. Plan on writing at least one 3-5 page paper each week. There are no exams, just rewriting of essays.
  • Keep up with the reading and the writing. The worst thing is to get behind!
  • Do more than one or two drafts; give your rewrites to a classmate to proofread.
  • If you need to learn to use the computer to wordprocess your college essays, be sure to sign up for a free computer class at the beginning of the semester! Go to ADM 110 to find out more.
