IEEC Commitment Information
A requirement of your J-1 visa is to help internationalize SF State. You will be able to fulfill this requirement through your participation in the International Education Exchange Council (IEEC). IEEC is a student organization with a mission of bringing international students and SFSU students together for exchange and cooperation. The organization promotes cross-cultural integration through a variety of social events, activities, trips, films, tours, lectures, sports and programs. Furthermore, the IEEC is a service organization dedicated to promoting study abroad and cultural exchange while raising money for overseas scholarships. In order to help you decide on a commitment, this page covers different contributions in depth as well as special contribution options.

IEEC Officers
Officers run the IEEC. This is one of the most challenging, yet rewarding commitments you can choose. As an officer, you will gain expereince in leadership, event planning, financial management, publicity, and a multitude of other valuable skills depending on the IEEC committee that you choose. You can find more about committee choices here.Minimum Commitment
- Two 6-hour Saturday Officer Retreats at the beginning of the school year for traning.
- Once a week office hour commitment.
- Once a week committee meeting.
Students who choose this commitment normally call it the most rewarding. Students commonly say that being an officer helped them gain organizational and leadership skills, and allowed them to meet a large variety of international and domestic students.

Country Ambassadors
Country Ambassadors represent their home universities during events and other social events. Each university must have one country ambassador. If you are the only one from your university, you must choose this commitment. If you come from a university with multiple representatives, you will need to chose one country ambassador from among your numbers.Minimum Commitment
- 5 Hours work in the Office of International Programs
- Coordination and Representation at the IEEC Study Abroad Fair (one per semester)or
- Participation in another promotional IEEC program, such as TReaT or the Marketing Committee
Students who choose this commitment normally describe it as fun, especially while participating in the Study Abroad Fair because students get to meet many students, and advise them on their home universities.
Study Abroad Fair Information
Each semester, the IEEC hosts a Study Abroad Fair in order to raise awareness about Study Abroad Options at SF State. The Country Ambassadors build tables that both promote their countrys and their home universities. The country with the best table will win the coveted Best Table Trophy and bragging rights for the fair. The fairs usually take place in October and April of each year.
Students request materials from their home universities, dress up in their native clothing, give away candy and other small treats, and have even gone so far as to build castles or boats in order to represent their home countries.
If you would like to see examples of past tables, the IEEC has a number of Study Abroad Fair photos and photo albums in their Facebook profile.Back to top
Tablers
Tablers spend one hour a week tabling for Study Abroad and the IEEC in order to promote SF State's exchange programs and IEEC events. The table is out in the Quad four days a week, Monday through Thursday, 11:00am to 2:00pm. You do not need to do tabling on rainy days.Minimum Commitment
- One hour per week
- May need to carry a table and table decorations
Students who choose tabling normally say that it helped them meet new people as well as their fellow tablers.

Language Exchange
The Lanaguage Exchange Program pairs international students with domestic students in order to improve their second language skills. This is a good commitment for students who want or need to improve their English skills in trade for teaching another student their mother tongue.Minimum Commitment
- One hour per week speaking with another student.
Students who choose this commitment normally enjoy it, stating that they got to make a friend, learn more about American culture, and improve their English skills. They like the fact that they are oblidged to speak English. However, a few students with near-native English abilities have not found this commitment as useful.

Flyerers & Chalkers
Flyering and Chalking require the least amount of involvment in the organization. For flyering, you need to pick up a stack of about 10 flyers, and post them once a week on SF State bulletin boards throughout the campus, which usually averages about 15 to 20 minutes of time. For chalking, you will write one to two advertisements in chalk around the university each week. This is an ideal commitment if you have a heavy course load and busy schedule.Minimum Commitment
- Pick up a stack of flyers once a week from the Office of International Programs
- Post flyers in buildings each week
- Write brief advertisements in chalk each week
Students normally do not have much feedback for this commitment, except to say that they were able to explore the campus a bit. Some do choose to supplement this activity by helping out at other events or being apart of an IEEC committee.

Special Contributions
At times, students bring specialized skills to SF State such as performers, coders, instructors (for example, dance, calligraphy, etc.), and more. In these cases, the Office of International Programs will create a specialized commitment plan for that student. If you believe that you have a special talent that will not fit in to the categories above, please speak with the Exchange Program Advisors.Back to top
