What is International Education Week?

Since the year 2000, International Education Week has been an annual nationwide celebration of both international education and intercultural understanding. Its primary focus has been the importance of increasing knowledge and awareness of the world's cultures among students and the wider SFSU community. But it also highlights the vital role that international education and exchange programs play in promoting peace in the world.

For members of the SF State community, our hope is that International Education Week will be an opportunity for you to learn something new, taste another culture, and begin to realize that the world is full of myriad opportunities to learn about cultures.

When is International Education Week?
Festivities this year will take place November 17-21, 2008.

What kinds of events will happen during International Education Week?
  • CultureFest, a culture fair and talent show presented by SF State students
  • Open classrooms, as well as stand-alone lectures by SF State faculty
  • Presentation by visiting diplomats
  • Internationally themed meals
  • Films, performances, and art exhibits
  • "World at a Glance" - a series of presentations of SF State's study abroad programs and the countries of their locations.

How can faculty get involved in International Education Week on campus?

  • Host and/or present an internationally focused program for the campus community **
  • Publicize IEW among your colleagues, students, and friends
  • Offer your students extra credit for attending selected IEW events.
  • Come and enjoy CultureFest, "World at a Glance", or other events sponsored by your colleagues and students

**We suggest that you offer events during your regular class session and require your students (or others in your department) to attend.

I want to plan an event for International Education Week. How can I let you know?

You can link to an event proposal form from this web-site. We prefer that proposal forms be completed on-line and sent via e-mail to iew@sfsu.edu. However, proposals may also be sent by fax to (415)338-6234. Please note that proposals for events unrelated to International Education may not be accepted. The preliminary deadline is Friday, September 26th.
