Office of International Programs (OIP)

What Is OIPNEWS?

OIPNEWS is the primar vehicle we use for distribution of very important information to the international student and scholar community at San Francisco State University (SF State). Started in 1994, OIPNEWS is a very powerful communication tool which we hope you will use during your stay at SF State!

OIPNEWS makes use of listserv technology and is intended to be a form of electronic communication for international students and scholars attending San Francisco State University (SF State). The Office of International Programs (OIP) at SF State hopes to use OIPNEWS to provide weekly updates of activities, events, workshops, important immigration and visa information, etc. that we feel would be useful and informative to the international student and scholar community at SF State.

Each week, we post an "OIPNEWS Weekly Update" message in addition to a limited number of "OIPNEWS EXTRAS" and "OIPNEWS ALERTS". These messages include critical information on the latest visa and immigration rules and regulations, travel updates, reminders about when to apply for Post-Completion Practical Training, when to request a travel signature on your I-20, etc. Information will also be included about the annual "Green Card" lottery, upcoming workshops, seminars, events and activities, as well as well as other newsworthy articles on topics of special interest to our many international students and scholars! We will also include health and safety information together with information that we feel would be useful and informative to the international student and scholar community at SF State!

As a result of the many changes in immigration and visa regulations, staff at OIP feel that now, more than ever, it is critically important for each and every international student & scholar to subscribe to OIPNEWS. These new regulations are related to the Federal government's SEVIS (Student & Exchange Visitor Information System) Internet-based tracking system and dramatically change the way in which the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) collects data on international students & scholars and on how SF State reports this data to the U.S. government. The best way to keep informed and to understand your responsibilities under the new regulations is to subscribe to OIPNEWS!

Please note that this list is for announcement purposes only. Only designated persons from OIP can post directly to this list.

SF State student organizations or individuals that have an announcement that is of common interest to the international student and scholar community at SF State, please e-mail your message directly to the list at oipnews@sfsu.edu or to the list moderator below. Announcements regarding upcoming academic, professional, cultural, social, religious, or recreational activities and events are welcomed, or announcements concerning timely issues that are of relevance to a substantial number of international students and scholars attending SF State. Such information may be posted to OIPNEWS for the benefit of those subscribed.

We hope that you will find our e-mail newsletter, OIPNEWS, to be interesting, informative and helpful as we continue in our efforts to keep you up-to-date on all issues of importance to international students and scholars at SF State . Any ideas which might help our effort to keep you informed would be most welcome. Just send them to us at oip@sfsu.edu and we will take your suggestions and ideas under consideration. We hope that you enjoy and learn from reading each issue of OIPNEWS which comes to you this semester.

Special Notice For OIPNEWS Subscribers Using Hotmail

To All OIPNEWS Subscribers:

It has come to our attention that some subscribers to OIPNEWS may have been unsubscribed from our electronic newsletter and are no longer receiving OIPNEWS messages.

This may have happened for several reasons.

First, if you are subscribed to OIPNEWS with a "Hotmail" or "Yahoo" e-mail account, you may have some difficulty receiving OIPNEWS messages. Both Hotmail and Yahoo use special filters to prevent you from receiving what their e-mail systems have identified as "spam" or junk mail. Their filter systems usually identify spam or junk mail as mail that originates from a listserv (such as OIPNEWS) that sends the same e-mail message to many individuals at the same time. OIPNEWS messages are then not sent to your "in box" but are instead sent to a "bulk" mail folder in your e-mail account. To stop this from happening, you will need to go into your Hotmail or Yahoo account and reconfigure the way you receive your e-mail messages by telling Hotmail or Yahoo that you want these types of messages sent to your in box. Please see the "Steps To Change The Hotmail Settings To Receive Listserv Messages" below for further information. If you are not sure how to do this, please check with the Help Desk at Hotmail or Yahoo.

Another reason why you are not receiving your OIPNEWS messages may be due to the fact that your e-mail in box may be full. When this happens, messages that are sent to you through OIPNEWS are 鈥渂ounced back鈥 (returned) to the Office of International Programs as "undeliverable" or "error" messages. We must then delete your e-mail address from OIPNEWS so that we stop receiving these error messages from your e-mail server. Checking your e-mail account more frequently and deleting old messages will help to solve this problem.

We hope that this message helps to explain why you may not longer be receiving OIPNEWS. Please feel free to contact the Office of International Programs at oip@sfsu.edu if we can be of further assistance or if you have additional questions.

Steps To Change The Hotmail Settings To Receive Listserv Messages:

  1. Log into your Hotmail email account.
  2. Go to the Options panel in hotmail. It is written next to the Contacts tab. Click on the Options tab.
  3. Click on the 'Safe List'.
  4. It will take you to another window as shown below. Type in the listserv email address (oipnews@sfsu.edu) in the text field below 'Type a single e-mail address (or domain).
  5. Click on Add. This will add the e-mail address to the Safe List.
  6. Click Ok. Messages from email addresses in the Safe List are always delivered to your Inbox.
