For those of you who will be in the San Francisco Bay Area during the summer break, you may want to check-out the "Stern Grove Festival."  It's FREE and is a great way to spend a lazy Sunday summer afternoon!  These free concerts take place in San Francisco's "Stern Grove" located at the corner of 19th Avenue and Sloat Blvd. (within easy walking distance of the university) and are usually very popular (and as a result, very crowded!). So, be sure to arrive early to get the best seats (seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis) and bring a blanket or some folding lawn or beach chairs to sit on and a picnic lunch.  And have a great time!

The Stern Grove Festival is San Francisco's celebration of community, nature, and the arts. Every summer, the Stern Grove Festival brings world-class performing arts to the city of San Francisco, admission-free, in one of the country's most beautiful and unique natural settings. Now in its 74 th year of free Sunday afternoon concerts, the Festival has recently announced it 10-concert schedule for 2011. Some of the many artists who will be participating include the San Francisco the San Francisco Opera, Ballet, Symphony Orchestra, Joan Baez, and Roberta Flack, among many others.

The Stern Grove Festival also presents a series of 11am pre-concert talks at the Trocadero Clubhouse in Stern Grove as well as a number of "Musical Conversations" with festival performers at the Community Music Center, the Palace of the Legion of Honor and the Academy of Sciences.

There is no admission charge for Stern Grove Festival events.  Gates open at 10am and concerts begin at 2pm.  Blankets, low beach chairs and picnicking are encouraged on the lawns, but arrive early.  Food and drinks are available from the festival's concession stands.
