Summit 2003:
Race and Culture on Campus: Issues and Strategies
Dear Member of the SFSU Community:
From time to time, campus or world events prompt us to come together
as a university community to air our views, share our feelings, and
set a positive path for the future.
Incidents earlier this semester in our residence halls suggest that
the time is ripe for an all-campus gathering. The incidents initially
appeared to be overtly racist. Upon investigation, they did not turn
out to be racist, but they did raise questions about racial and cultural
misunderstanding, naiveté and insensitivity that may persist
on campus. , Many of the details of this complicated situation were
well presented in the Golden Gate Xpress article published on October
9, 2003.
To address the issues and feelings that surfaced as a result of these
incidents, we, as leaders of campus shared governance bodies, are convening
a campus summit. We invite the entire campus community to join us at
the Student Center on Friday, November 14, between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00
p.m., for "Summit: Race and Culture on Campus -- Issues and Strategies."
Working in both large and small groups, students, faculty, staff and
administrators will help develop recommendations to be presented at
the end of the day, during the closing reception. In the days after
the summit, we will work to develop a process to implement those recommendations
that aim to improve campus life in relation to race and culture.
San Francisco State University is proud of its record of facing issues
directly, growing from them, and improving our University based on that
growth. We strongly encourage all students, staff, faculty and administrators,
to attend all or as much of the day as possible and join us at the end
of the day for the presentation of recommendations. The event will begin
in Jack Adams Hall on the terrace level of the Student Union. In order
to help estimate attendance and to ensure your seating at lunch, please
go to the following Web site:
http://www.sfsu.edu/~ohr/summit2k3.html and indicate
that you plan to attend.
Greater detail about the summit agenda will soon be available on SFSU’s
Web site. Look for the “Summit” prompt on our home page.
San Francisco State is our community and it is up to all of us to help
shape it in positive ways. We hope to see you on November 14.
