Subject: Report From the Summit on Race and
Culture, November 14, 2003
In response to campus climate issues, you jointly convened the campus
community in a summit to address issues of race and culture on campus.
More than 500 campus community members participated in the summit on
Friday, November 14, 2003. This process produced over 150 issues from
community participants. Those issues formed the core set of data from
which the community formulated 10 priority recommendations, and numerous
strategies to achieve the recommendations.
There are three sections to the report. Section 1 provides a listing
of the 10 priority recommendations from the summit. Section 2 provides
notes on the complete list of issues and comments from which the 10
priority recommendations were derived. Where a participant’s original
comment informed the creation of one of the ten priority statements,
it is reported under that priority. Where the original comment does
not fit one of the 10 priorities, it is listed at the end. Section 3
is a listing of the strategies suggested to achieve each recommendation.
This report is submitted as a working document. It intentionally maintains
a significant amount of the original tone, style and sentiment of the
public input. The work of the summit was to provide the shared governance
partnership with guidance on addressing issues of race and culture on
campus. First, the university is committed to addressing the 10 priority
issues as a starting point for the campus. Second, the university is
committed to reviewing all of the detailed recommendations and strategies
to guide long-term planning and initiatives.
