    Services We Offer

The AA/EEP office develops, evaluates, and monitors SFSU’s affirmative action plans to ensure that equal employment opportunity laws and guidelines are followed. We accomplish this by:

Consulting with managers about diversity and compliance

It is important for managers and supervisors to successfully hire and manage a diverse work force.

By answering technical question about laws and guidelines, we help prevent situations in which complaints might arise and resolve existing problems before they reach the formal complaint stage. We also assist managers, supervisors, and department heads in creating and updating the goal-oriented plans and timetables that are essential to maintaining SFSU’s diversity.

Researching and interpreting laws, regulations, policies, and court decisions

The AA/EEP Office staff is trained to interpret laws, regulations, and policies for managers, supervisors, employees, students, and members of protected groups. We perform our own research and receive guidance from SFSU’s and CSU’s legal offices; as a result, we provide the most up-to-date information on court interpretations and changes in the law.

      Training and educating

Training and educating about AA/EEP issues can improve managerial supervisory skills, increase awareness of specific issues, and help prevent potential problems. Training may consist of individual consultations, seminars or group workshops. Our seminars are usually free; they can be held on-site for large groups and scheduled to suit your needs some programs are also available on video.

      Developing employment opportunity activities

The AA/EEP Office sponsors many activities that enhance employment opportunities for women, diverse ethnic/cultural groups, people with disabilities, and veterans. We work with search committees, personnel offices, campus occupational groups, outside agencies to diversify applicant pools and reach out to potential applicants.

      Participating in AA/EEP Funding

We participate in awarding funds for the Affirmative Action Grant Program, which assists underrepresented groups in faculty positions to achieve tenure and promotion, and the CSU Loan Forgiveness Program, which provides funds to doctoral students from under-represented groups to diversify faculty candidate pools.

      Resolving complaints and processing cases

Any employee, applicant for employment, students, applicant for admission, union, or organization can use the AA/EEP Office’s services to address questions or problems relating to discrimination. A formal complaint is often not necessary; many issues are resolved informally through consultation.

We respond to, investigate, and mediate complaints alleging discrimination in employment and education programs.

      Collecting and analyzing data

Gathering and interpreting data is central to implementing affirmative action and equal employment opportunity. This is how goals are established, and how to ensure they are attained.

We gather, analyze, and maintain a broad spectrum of data to help mangers, campus departments, and outside organizations in their diversification efforts.

Creating linkages with other campus and community resources

The AA/EEP Office works in coordination with Human Relations, and other campus department to provide them — and each individual — with the most comprehensive service. We are also in regular communication with many ethnic, cultural, and special-interest groups and committees on campus.
