Welcome to the America Counts tutoring program web page. The Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL) has administrated SFSU's America Counts program for seven years.

America Counts is a federally funded work-study program in which OCSL hires SFSU students per academic year as tutors to work at K-8 after-school programs throughout San Francisco. America Counts tutors have a special emphasis on mathematics and science tutoring and only work during after school hours (usually 3pm-6pm). As an America Counts tutor, you will have the opportunity to gain important skills in education, earn your Federal Work-Study allotment, and make a difference in your community and child's education.

America Counts is a federally funded work-study program aimed at improving basic math skills in elementary school students who are performing below their academic level. Tutors are assigned to sites in San Francisco where they remain for the entire academic year. They collaborate with school staff and faculty to develop the most effective tutoring methods for children's individual needs. America Counts tutors work toward the improvement and education of basic math skills in children grades K-8. Tutoring positions also offer possible scholarship opportunities.

In August, America Counts begins interviewing for fall tutors. Interviews take place during late August and into the fall until all the positions are filled. All employees are assigned to a tutorial site where they work for the remainder of the year, all sites are predetermined and in San Francisco. Students' preferred site will be considered but the final placement decision will be made by the program staff. Please note that OCSL is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans gender people are encouraged to apply. Tutors must be:

  1. Work-study eligible and in good academic standing as defined by financial aid requirements for work study. If you have a question about work-study please visit the SFSU Financial Aid Office or visit their web site: http://www.sfsu.edu/~finaid/Workstudy.html
  2. Enrolled as a full-time student for the academic year.
  3. Able to make a one year commitment as an employee to the America Counts Program.
  4. Available to work approximately 10-13 hours a week between 2:30pm - 6:30pm M-F.

Please note that only SFSU full-time work study eligible students can apply for an America Counts tutoring position. If you have any questions about work-study, please visit the SFSU Financial Aid Office or visit their web site: http://www.sfsu.edu/~finaid/Workstudy.html

Work-Study Voucher (xls): PLEASE SEE THE DATES BELOW
Your paychecks are generated from this form. Please fill out the form using the appropriate tabs on the spreadsheet. You will have to estimate the hours for your last week of work for the month. If you end up not meeting the hours during that last week but were paid for it, please fill out and submit a Work-Study Voucher Adjustment Template (you can download it below) when you come in to ICCE to pick up your paycheck. We will adjust the following month's paycheck to reflect the amount. The Work-Study Voucher is not signed by your site supervisor, just you. Please leave the Supervisor section for the America Counts Program Coordinator to sign. The original work-study voucher must be handed or mailed in. No faxes will be accepted. Please see the following section for due dates.

Work-Study Voucher Adjustment Template (doc): DUE BY THE 15th OF THE FOLLOWING MONTH
If an adjustment to your Student Payroll Voucher is needed, download and print this form. Directions on how to make adjustments are indicated in the template. You may specify the adjustment(s) you made, or authorize ICCE to make the appropriate adjustments to your Student Payroll Voucher. Please turn in this adjustment template along with your Student Payroll Voucher.

Site Time Sheet (doc): DUE BY THE 15th OF THE FOLLOWING MONTH (if applicable)
Due by the 15th of the following month in which your hours were served. For example if the site time sheet is for the month of September it is due by October 15th. This form must be signed by your site supervisor and handed in. No faxes will be accepted. Please bring the original STS in with you when you pick up your paycheck. Your paycheck will not be released unless you bring an STS with you.

Please use the following webform to fill out the Student Profile Form. This form helps ICCE keep track of the demographics of the students as well as progress of the tutees.
