Welcome to the America Counts tutoring program web page. The Office of Community Service Learning (OCSL) has administrated SFSU's America Counts program for seven years.

America Counts is a federally funded work-study program in which OCSL hires SFSU students per academic year as tutors to work at K-8 after-school programs throughout San Francisco. America Counts tutors have a special emphasis on mathematics and science tutoring and only work during after school hours (usually 3pm-6pm). As an America Counts tutor, you will have the opportunity to gain important skills in education, earn your Federal Work-Study allotment, and make a difference in your community and child's education.
America Counts is a federally funded work-study program aimed at improving basic math skills in elementary school students who are performing below their academic level. Tutors are assigned to sites in San Francisco where they remain for the entire academic year. They collaborate with school staff and faculty to develop the most effective tutoring methods for children's individual needs. America Counts tutors work toward the improvement and education of basic math skills in children grades K-8. Tutoring positions also offer possible scholarship opportunities.

In August, America Counts begins interviewing for fall tutors. Interviews take place during late August and into the fall until all the positions are filled. All employees are assigned to a tutorial site where they work for the remainder of the year, all sites are predetermined and in San Francisco. Students' preferred site will be considered but the final placement decision will be made by the program staff. Please note that OCSL is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Women, people of color, gay, lesbian, bisexual and trans gender people are encouraged to apply. Tutors must be:
- Work-study eligible and in good academic standing as defined by financial aid requirements for work study. If you have a question about work-study please visit the SFSU Financial Aid Office or visit their web site: http://www.sfsu.edu/~finaid/Workstudy.html
- Enrolled as a full-time student for the academic year.
- Able to make a one year commitment as an employee to the America Counts Program.
- Available to work approximately 10-13 hours a week between 2:30pm - 6:30pm M-F.
Please note that only SFSU full-time work study eligible students can apply for an America Counts tutoring position. If you have any questions about work-study, please visit the SFSU Financial Aid Office or visit their web site: http://www.sfsu.edu/~finaid/Workstudy.html
