What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps members participate in local service programs operated by not-for-profit organizations, local and state government entities, Indian tribes, territories, institutions of higher education, local school and police districts, and partnerships among any of the above. Members serving in these programs help meet communities' critical education, public safety, environmental, and other human needs. For more information please visit the AmeriCorps web site at http://www.americorps.org. Return to top.
What is the pay?
AmeriCorps is NOT a job. It is community service. As such, members are not paid, instead they are provided a living allowance and, after their service, receive an education award paid as vouchers from the National Service Trust which may be redeemed, within seven years, to pay for current education costs at colleges, universities, other post-secondary institutions and approved school-to-work programs, or to pay back qualified student loans already incurred. Return to top.
So, how much is the "living allowance" and "education award"?
CSAP members receive a living allowance and an educational award. The living allowance is distributed in biweekly installments, and the education award is provided at the end of service. Return to top.
Does this impact financial aid?
By law, a member's living allowance does NOT affect work-study eligibility or eligibility for other federal student aid. Return to top.
Who are you looking for to fill these CSAP positions?

Members should have past experience with and appreciation for volunteering, volunteer coordination, and community service learning. CSAP members should be interested in learning and practicing skills in volunteer coordination and recruitment and community building. Members will work directly with a diverse population of clients, customers and staff in a variety of local community organizations and on SFSU campus. Return to top.
What qualifications do I need?
As an AmeriCorps member, you will be part of an historical service initiative and contribute to a growing and important national movement. We are looking for people who:
- Are extremely responsible and committed to serving as AmeriCorps members for a year.
- Have some experience in volunteering, volunteer coordination, and community service learning.
- Can successfully balance work with academic and other responsibilities.
- Have a genuine desire to serve and work with diverse communities and as part of a team.
- Are able to work independently and with limited supervision
Return to top.
What is the Time Commitment?
AmeriCorps members serve approximately 20-25 hours/wk for the academic year (900 or 450 hours). Holidays will follow the school calendar and will not count toward the hours served. By AmeriCorps rules, hours of service are divided 80-20. That is, 80% of the time is spent in providing a service and 20% of the time in orientation, training, and education. Members will attend an orientation and training. They also are expected to participate in bi-monthly reflection and/or training seminars conducted through the Office of Community Service Learning. These will be held every other Friday afternoon at the OCSL Office. Although regular service schedules may be negotiated to accommodate other commitments (such as class schedules) the majority of hours are to be served when the organization is open. This varies from site to site, and specific schedules are negotiated when the CSAP member is assigned to a site. Return to top.
