Juan (May) Lin,
custodian and May STAR, works the morning shift at the Student Health
Service with two other custodians. That means she is on the job by 4 a.m.
Most faculty and staff are still in bed when she starts her day, but Lin
says she likes the early schedule -- now that she has become accustomed
to it -- because it's quieter and easier to get everything done.
It's especially important that she be able to focus on her work. Because
it is a medical facility, the Student Health Service has specific needs
and requirements for cleanliness.
"May Lin sets an excellent example by her own hard work," said
Cristina Maristela, assistant director of campus support services. "She
is diligent, detail-oriented and thorough, and she never has an excuse
as to why work can't be done, but always suggests how to do it. She shows
her co-workers the way the staff from Health Center wants it done."
Although she admits that the work can be difficult at times, Lin enjoys
the camaraderie of her fellow custodians.
"I like all my co-workers," she said. "They are very nice."
Lin immigrated to the United States from China eight years ago. After
a couple other jobs, she joined Facility Services Enterprises in 1998.
She started out part time in Housing and Residential Services and then
later became a full-time employee.
A resident of San Francisco's Mission District, Lin enjoys spending time
with her husband, an AC Transit driver, and two sons, including going
to the park and visiting family.
