April 2005 STAR of the Month

Sylvia Leng, office manager for the Anthropology Department, possesses the same qualities as good office managers everywhere. She is organized, professional, responsive and, most important, unflappable.

James Quesada, chair of anthropology, agrees.

"Sylvia has been an extraordinarily calming influence in our department," he said. "Anthropologists are by nature mavericks and although we are scholars and students of collective life, we tend to operate individually. She has a way of pulling us together to do what must be done and making us all look good in the process. She projects an image of confidence and reasonableness that stimulates others -- students, faculty and staff -- to do their part to make things work!"

Leng oversees the daily operations of the department, updates its Web site, administers its budget, and assists its students, faculty and chair.

"The thing about this job I like is helping students," said Leng. "And whenever they come to me I seem to be able to help them."

Leng began working in the department as a work study student and then became office coordinator in late 2000. She was an international business major, but through her job, Leng has become friends with students in the department.

She enjoys her work -- and says that "it's actually fun" to learn new programs such as eTrac and the Finance Management System -- but she eventually wants to use what she learned in her degree program and work for an Asian-based company, perhaps in Singapore, Hong Kong or Japan.

An Oakland resident, Leng likes to go shopping and see movies with her friends.

Please join us in congratulating Sylvia and thank her for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Leng will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more.
