Although by no means required, it certainly helps that Coleen Whiteside, office manager for the Theatre Arts Department, enjoys the dramatic arts.

Whiteside performs the usual duties of an academic office manager, which include assisting department chair Roy Conboy in organizing the information on class offerings, managing the budget, and making sure the front office runs smoothly.

But Theatre Arts brings additional challenges as well. Whiteside works with the directors and technical directors on the budgets for each semester's productions (this often means large purchases at lumber yards and fabric stores) and she and her staff also coordinate scheduling for all of the department's classrooms which double as rehearsal spaces, so are always in demand.

It's challenging but enjoyable work.

"I like working with the students, actors and designers," she said. "They are all artistic individuals so that keeps things lively. There's never a dull moment."

Jo Tomalin, professor of theatre arts, is particularly happy with how Whiteside has updated and streamlined office forms, documents and procedures.

"This helps faculty to ease our busy lives," Tomalin said, "and also serves our students who need up-to-date and efficient access to procedures when faculty advise them."

Whiteside was born in Redwood City, but her parents moved to Illinois when she was growing up. She promised herself that she would move back, and after two years of college in Illinois, she did -- enrolling at SFSU and earning a degree in theatre management.

After working in Housing and Residential Services for seven years, Whiteside began graduate studies in cinema on campus and worked in Theatre Arts part time. Four years ago she became office manager.

Despite her busy schedule, she tries to attend all of the department productions, especially those that play on the main stage. She also has made a habit of attending the weekly student performances at the Brown Bag Theatre.

In addition to last spring's production of "Assassins," the 2000 production of Georges Feydeau's "A Flea on Her Ear" stands out.

"I'm not usually big on farce, but it was very funny," she said. "They had the timing down."

Whiteside lives in Park Merced. She also enjoys attending non-SFSU film screenings and theater productions and likes to travel. She visited Thailand last summer.

Please join us in congratulating Coleen and thank her for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Whiteside will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. She will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
