The College of Ethnic Studies computer lab is incredibly busy this time of year, but Michael Hornbuckle, information technology consultant for the College, has things well under control. With his trademark smile and rapid delivery, he instructs students on how to reboot a crashed computer, how to format a Web page for printing or how to save a final essay to a disc. And he continually answers the call for more paper for the printer. Hornbuckle is the May STAR of the Month.

In addition to serving as the manager of the College's small computer lab, Hornbuckle also supports the IT needs of faculty and staff -- acquiring hardware, installing software and troubleshooting problems.

The most rewarding thing he does is "fixing the impossible problems -- finding a solution as quickly as possible," said Hornbuckle. "But a lot of what I do is respond to three main complaints. 1. It won't print. 2. Something is wrong with my e-mail. 3. The attachment won't open."

He is the College's only IT employee so faculty and staff are grateful for his expertise and unflagging energy for tackling problems no matter how big or small.

"Michael can solve any computer-related hardware and software issue as well as just about most instructional technology problems," said Jim Okutsu, associate dean of ethnic studies. "I definitely and unashamedly rely on him to assist me with numerous IT-related problems and he never hesitates to come through. He [performs his duties] with professionalism and an incredibly upbeat demeanor."

Born, raised and educated in San Francisco, Hornbuckle was studying computer science on campus in the early '80s when he decided to take a couple of ethnic studies classes. One course was with Okutsu, who invited him to apply for a student assistant job. Around that time the personal computer revolution came into full swing and the University began an initiative to supply computers for all faculty and departments. Hornbuckle began assisting the college with its IT needs, and after he graduated in 1989, he successfully applied for the position he now holds.

But it's not all high tech for Hornbuckle. He also is a performer and writer with 18 Mighty Mountain Warriors, an Asian-American comedy troupe. The group performs about 10 shows a year. Hornbuckle claims that "every comedy group needs a fast talker and that's me." The students in the computer lab would agree.

Please join us in congratulating Michael and thank him for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Hornbuckle will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. He will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
