May 2003 STAR of the Month

Photo of Lien Ho Running the Student Health Service pharmacy requires precision and attention to detail. Dosages and problematic drug interactions need to be checked. Inventory needs to be kept full and up to date. The correct prescriptions and instructions on their use need to be delivered to the students.

Lien Ho, pharmacist at the Student Health Service, is a master of precision. For her excellent work in running the pharmacy, Ho was named STAR of the Month for May.

Ho has worked in the pharmacy for seven years. She replaced pharmacist Jimmy Wong when he retired after 23 years, and she credits him with setting the high standards that she has continued to uphold to provide excellent services to the campus community.

"I enjoy working with the other staff in the Student Health Service and especially helping our clientele, which is mostly students," Ho said. "When you have something to say they always listen."

Gil Ruiz, who works with Ho in the pharmacy, nominated her for the award. "Lien has organized the pharmacy to the extent that it is a pleasant and efficient place to work,"he said. "Her interactions with customers and providers is exemplary because she is courteous and calm regardless of the workload."

After earning her pharmacy degree from University of the Pacific, Ho worked in the retail pharamacy at a Bay Area Long's Drugs and in the pharmacy at the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto.

While she prefers the regular work schedule of the Student Health Service, Ho continues to work an occasional weekend at a retail pharamacy to help her keep up with all the newest drugs and changes in dosage. The Student Health Service pharmacy has a formulary of 500 drugs, but without the variety and turnover of a large retail pharmacy.

Ho lives in South San Francisco with her husband and two children. They enjoy traveling and are planning a trip to Maui this summer.

Please join us in congratulating Lien and thank her for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Ho will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. She will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
