March 2003 STAR of the Month

Salvador Gil

Salvador Gil has worked at SFSU for only a year but in that short period he's become a strong contributor to the Grounds Department where he's responsible for the upkeep of Cox Stadium and the surrounding landscaping.

For his attention to detail, quality and thoroughness, Gil received the March STAR of the Month Award.

A native of El Salvador, Gil has lived in the Bay Area for nearly two decades. On campus, he's put his vast knowledge of irrigation systems to work and helped solve a longstanding problem involving tree roots.

"We had to install benches in the Garden of Remembrance (in the courtyard outside Burk Hall) in areas of heavy roots," said Phil Evans, director of grounds and Gil's boss. "These areas had been considered impenetrable by all staff over the 13 years I've been here, but Salvador just took an axe and digging tools and found that he could make the holes where they needed to be."

Evans added: "Thanks to his energy, intelligence and dedication to achieving results, our grounds are being improved each day."

Gil, 38, enjoys working outside and likes to see the daily improvements his department makes.

"It looks better and better each day and I'm happy I have a part in that," he said as he cleaned the stadium track one Friday afternoon in preparation for a weekend meet.

Gil can often be seen with a leaf blower in hand as he battles leaves that fall from the eucalyptus trees above the track. It's important the track is clear of leaves for the many runners who train in the stadium.

The father of three also likes his job schedule. He's on campus before dawn and heads home about 2 p.m. with plenty of time to pick up his children after school.

"I'm the baby sitter, so we spend the afternoons doing homework, watching a little television and going to the park," he said.

Please join us in congratulating Salvador and thank him for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Gil will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. He will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
