July 2002 STAR of the Month

Jennifer Rivera
Jennifer Rivera, administrative support coordinator for the Kinesiology Department, is the STAR of the Month for July.

"Jennifer is a bright, conscientious and organized employee," said Allen Abraham, associate chair of Kinesiology. "She is empathic, diplomatic and patient and is able to handle difficult situations in a pleasant manner. She has the ability to reach across various levels and personalities and serve as a catalyst for creating a professional and friendly office environment."

Rivera is responsible for running the department's front office, which includes assisting students with petitions and faculty with curricular matters, while answering hundreds of questions a day. In May she willingly offered to temporarily fill the academic support analyst position when it was suddenly vacated, along with overseeing a temporary replacement for the front office.

"She is always willing to go out of her way to help students, faculty and staff," Abraham said. "For example, I have observed Jennifer on multiple occasions offer to walk disabled students to campus offices to ensure proper enrollment or patiently explain procedures and facilitate faculty contacts with students who have difficulty understanding. Her professional demeanor is essential when dealing with students in highly emotional, often difficult, situations."

Rivera has worked in the Kinesiology Department since September 2001. She graduated from SFSU in December 1999 with a bachelor's degree, double majoring in Asian American studies and sociology.

While a student she worked as a library page and as a student assistant in Physical Planning and Development. After positions with several dot-com companies, she decided to return to SFSU.

"I like interacting with and helping students, staff and faculty with any questions they may have," she said. "There's never a dull moment working in the Kinesiology Department office."

A resident of Fremont, Rivera serves as a volunteer with the Filipino Task Force on AIDS (FTFA). She has marched with FTFA in the San Francisco Pride Parade the last four years. She is also a board member of the Friends of the Filipino American Center at the San Francisco Public Library.

Please join us in congratulating Jennifer and thank her for making such a difference.

As the STAR of the Month, Rivera will enjoy four free lunches on campus, a free parking pass or equivalent in one month's public transportation costs, and more. She will also be eligible for the STAR of the Year award.
