SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 28, 1999 -- To celebrate the University’s 1999 Centennial, the San Francisco State University’s Alumni Association has announced a gift of $100,000 over the next five years to create the Alumni Scholarship Program at S.F. State.
"The SFSU Alumni Association is proud of our long-standing support to our students through a variety of scholarship programs," said Allen Sherwood, executive director of the S.F. State Alumni Association. "It is one of the Alumni Association’s most important roles in serving the university."
The S.F. State Alumni Association has a long history of funding scholarship programs through gifts from alumni. The Alumni Association recently created the "Alumnus/Alumna of the Year Scholarship" of $2,000. The first Alumnus of the Year scholarship was awarded in 1998 in honor of state senator John Burton, who was named S.F. State’s Alumnus of the Year that year by the Alumni Association.
This year’s Alumna of the Year scholarship will honor S.F. State alumna and NASA astronaut Dr. Yvonne Cagle, who received her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from S.F. State in 1981. Cagle, who has a medical degree from the University of Washington, is one of three African American women astronauts in the history of NASA. She will be the keynote speaker at the university’s commencement on Saturday, May 29 at 1 p.m. on campus.
The Alumna of the Year scholarship will be presented at an awards reception Friday, May 28 in the Seven Hills Conference Center on campus.
