SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 29, 1999 -- Strong visuals: Grads to march in royal purple robes to mark centennial and they decorate their caps and gowns in outrageous balloons, messages, flowers! Families from around the world come to see loved ones graduate.
WHO: Nearly 4,000 graduates (of 6,464 total) and more than 20,000 in attendance will hear keynote speaker and Alumna of the Year and Novato native, Yvonne Cagle who is one of only four African American women astronauts.
WHEN: Saturday, May 29, 1 p.m., processional into the stadium begins at 12:15. Commencement program begins at 1 p.m. Keynote speech by Yvonne Cagle begins just after 2:30 p.m. Commencement will be held rain or shine.
WHERE: Cox Stadium, behind SFSU’s gymnasium. Campus is located at the corner of 19th and Holloway Avenues. Press area is located at southwest corner of the stadium, next to the band shell.
BACKGROUND: Founded in 1899 as a teacher training program, San Francisco State University has grown into a major cosmopolitan university known for the quality of its academic programs, its diverse student body, excellent faculty and strong community partnerships. The University has conferred over 185,000 degrees over the past 100 years, and today has approximately 27,000 students and 3,000 faculty and staff.
DETAILS: The university will provide a pool feed (trained on speakers only) for interested media. Media will also be able to get onto the field for crowd shots and shots of the platform party.
