Media Advisory: Capitol Hill briefing on college completion with equity: Metro Academies as a national model

WHAT: Metro Academies is an innovative partnership between San Francisco State University and City College of San Francisco that has shown promise in retaining underrepresented students who are at-risk for dropping out of college. The program reconfigures the first two years of college so that students work in a learning community of linked courses tied to a high-growth career path. Students are supported through tutoring, extra academic counseling and one-on-one support from faculty.

Metro Academies will be the focus of a Capitol Hill briefing, where leaders and students from the program will share how it may serve as a national model for resolving the college completion gap between low-income and more affluent students.

WHO: Remarks will be delivered by:

  • House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi
  • Rep. Jackie Speier
  • Eduardo M. Ochoa, assistant secretary for postsecondary education
  • Spiros Protopsaltis, senior education policy advisor to Sen. Tom Harkin
  • San Francisco State University President Robert A. Corrigan
  • San Francisco State University Provost Sue V. Rosser

A panel discussing Metro Academies will include:

  • Mary Beth Love, director, Metro Academies Initiative
  • Savita Malik, curriculum and faculty affairs director, Metro Academies Initiative
  • Students from SF State and City College of San Francisco
  • Jane Wellman, executive director, National Association of Systems Head

WHEN: Thursday, March 1, 12 noon

WHERE: Room 200 of the House Visitors Center, Capitol Hill, Washington D.C.
