Media Advisory: SF State experts available to comment on the political situation in Egypt
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 2, 2010 -- San Francisco State University has faculty experts available to comment on the political unrest in Egypt. Experts can discuss such topics as Egypt's political future, the relationship between Egypt and the U.S., and media representations of the protests in Cairo.

Mahmood Monshipouri, associate professor of international relations, is an expert on human rights, democratization and social change in the Muslim World. He can discuss what it will take for Egypt to transition to a new regime; U.S. foreign policy towards Egypt; the impact of the protests on the stability of the Arab world; and comparisons between Egypt's protests and those that took place in Iran in 1979 and 2009.
"The U.S. must strike a balance between its strategic geopolitical interest in supporting Egypt's current regime and the values of democracy and human rights that America values and promotes," Monshipouri said. "It's an explosive situation in Egypt and the U.S. needs to make sure that it comes down on the right side of history."

Dina Ibrahim, associate professor of broadcast and electronic communication arts, is a native of Egypt. She returned to the U.S after a month's visit to Egypt one week before the demonstrations began. Ibrahim can discuss Egyptian politics; how the protests have been covered by broadcast media; and the role of new media in reporting the protests. Ibrahim is a former foreign correspondent who has reported for the BBC World Service, CNN and UPI.

Mohammad Salama, assistant professor of Arabic studies, is a native of Egypt who can comment on Egyptian politics and culture, particularly President Mubarak's rule and rise to power.
