World philosophers gather at SF State

WHAT: Internationally renowned philosophers of science will discuss the role of models in linking theory to experience. Models addressed will range from contemporary models of economic forecasting to models of the physical world devised by Einstein and Galileo.

WHEN: Friday, March 20 and Saturday, March 21, 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

WHERE:  Humanities building room 587, San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave. (at 19th Ave.), San Francisco

WHO: Hosted by SF State Philosophy Professor and leading science philosopher Bas van Fraassen and Assistant Professor of Philosophy Isabelle Peschard

Guest presenters:

  • Joseph Rouse of Wesleyan University will discuss the experiments and models that led to Einstein's special theory of relativity
  • Karen Barad of University of California, Santa Cruz will discuss experiments and models that show some of the ways in which quantum theory changed physics 
  • Nancy Cartwright of the London School of Economics and University of California, San Diego will discuss the relationship between models and experiments from Galileo to the latest economic forecasts
  • Michael Weisberg of the University of Pennsylvania will discuss the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer's San Francisco Bay Model
