SAN FRANCISCO, February 24, 2003 - Lilia Chavez, a university adviser with extensive experience in mentoring students and coordinating outreach programs to K-12 schools, was recently named director of the Office of Student Programs and Leadership Development (OSPLD) at San Francisco State University. She previously held the title of SFSU adviser/assistant to the dean of undergraduate studies for coordination of K-12 access programs.

Chavez, a South San Francisco resident and native of San Francisco's Mission District, will oversee the registration of all student organizations on campus and the facilitation of student organization events.

Chavez began her new job in January. She plans to establish a student leadership network on campus that represents the community's diversity and creates a respectful atmosphere.

"Lilia brings great energy, enthusiasm and planning skills to the position," said Kevin Bowman, associate vice president for student affairs. "We feel she will work effectively with students, faculty and staff."

In Chavez's previous position, she coordinated several mentoring and tutoring programs that helped high school students prepare for college and SFSU students succeed in math and English courses.

She holds a bachelor of science in organizational behavior from University of San Francisco and a master of science in rehabilitation counseling from SFSU. She is completing her doctorate in international and multicultural education from USF.

One of the largest campuses in the CSU system, SFSU was founded in 1899 and today is a highly diverse, comprehensive, public and urban university.
