SAN FRANCISCO-A vibrant extravaganza of dance styles is featured in the New Moves Dance Showcase presented by San Francisco State University's Dance Department, Friday and Saturday, December 7 & 8 at 8 pm in McKenna Theatre on the SFSU campus, 19th and Holloway avenues. Under the direction of SFSU Dance Professor Dr. Albirda Rose, 12 student choreographers contribute original work, incorporating both student and professional dancers. As part of the showcase, Village Dancers 2001 debuts SFSU student choreography set and taught for child performers from the Visitacion Valley unit of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco, Saturday, December 8 at 3 pm. The Children's matinee includes a song from local artist Johnny Land and an appearance by local dancer and singer Joshua Caleb.
Many New Moves alumni have succeeded in the professional dance world, such as Kendra Kimbrough of The Kendra Kimbrough Dance Ensemble, Patrick Peel of the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Company and Kamala Devam of the California Contemporary Dancers.
The Village Dancers include over 20 boys and girls who participate in a newly established dance program at the Visitacion Valley unit of the Boys and Girls Club of San Francisco. The program is a collaboration between the club and SFSU that began in 2000 as part of an SFSU community service learning grant.
