SFSU to offer more than 670 classes this summer

Financial aid will be available for expected 6,500 students in new state-supported Summer Semester

SAN FRANCISCO, March 7, 2001--Marking a new trend in year-round operations, San Francisco State University students may apply for financial aid to attend the University's greatly expanded, state-supported Summer Semester.

More than 670 classes will be offered, including many high-demand courses required for graduation. In a pilot program last year, 67 classes were offered in the summer. University officials expect 6,000 to 7,000 students to enroll in this year's Summer Semester, compared to only 640 students last year.

Because Summer Semester is state-supported, financial aid will be available for eligible students. In the past, students wishing to take classes over the summer had to register through the College of Extended Learning and bear the full cost of the classes without the opportunity to receive financial aid.

"More students - particularly those in financial need - will now have additional opportunities to take the courses they need to graduate," said Gail Whitaker, SFSU associate vice president for academic program development. "In addition, students who want to graduate sooner will be able to take many high-demand courses during the summer."

Newly admitted and continuing SFSU students may register for up to 14 units beginning Monday, April 2. Non-SFSU students may enroll in Summer Semester courses through the College of Extended Learning beginning Monday, April 16.

The summer session will run in two five-week sessions, June 11 - July 15 or July 16 - Aug. 19, and one 10-week session, June 11 - Aug. 19.

On-campus housing also will be available during the summer on a first-come, first-served basis. For summer housing applications or more information, contact Housing and Residential Services at (415) 338-1067 or visit www.sfsu.edu/~housing.

To apply for financial aid, students must have the 2000-2001 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the SFSU Office of Student Financial Aid and submit a Summer Financial Aid Request Form, which will be available Wednesday, March 21. For details on financial aid, call (415) 338-7000 or visit www.sfsu.edu/~finaid .

For more information about SFSU's Summer Semester, call (415) 338-3000 or visit www.cel.sfsu.edu/summer/.

All California State University campuses plan to have year-round operations in effect next year. Gov. Gray Davis has allocated an additional $16 million of this year's state budget to support the CSU's year-round operations. Summer Semester will help SFSU prepare for Tidal Wave II, the influx of children of the Baby Boom generation and immigrants expected to flood California universities by 2010.

The fourth largest campus in the 23-campus California State University system, SFSU is a highly diverse, comprehensive, public and urban university.
