SAN FRANCISCO, February 14,

SFSU cinema expert Bill Nichols compares the Academy Awards to political party conventions. He can also offer comments and opinions on this year's nominees.

"There's something appealing about having a so-called body of experts vote for the Academy Awards," says Bill Nichols. "Like the political party conventions, it creates a forum for a larger public debate. Then people decide for themselves which films are truly the most meritorious."

Bill Nichols, professor of cinema

Areas of expertise: recent U.S. and foreign films; documentaries; ethnographic film

Nichols is a film critic for "The Film Gang" on National Public Radio affiliate station KUSP-FM in Santa Cruz and has been a guest film commentator on NPR's "Morning Edition." His books include "Ideology and the Image," "Newsreel: Film and Revolution on the American Left" and the widely reviewed anthology "Movies and Methods." Nichols is former president of the Society for Cinema Studies.
