Golden opportunity for SFSU at 2000 Summer Olympics
Three faculty members lend their expertise at world-class event
SYDNEY, Australia, Sept. 15, 2000 - As the 2000 Summer Olympics are now under way, three faculty members from San Francisco State University have been working behind the scenes to help interpret languages, select team members and provide entertainment during the opening ceremonies.
- Pierrette Jeanmonod, SFSU English professor, is serving as an English-French interpreter for coaches and judges in rhythmic gymnastics, one of the few Olympic sports in which only women compete. French is the official language of gymnastics. Jeanmonod, a native of Switzerland, has interpreted English and French for the Olympic Rhythmic Gymnastics Technical Committee for 15 years.
- David Matsumoto, SFSU psychology professor and kinesiology lecturer, is the director of development for the U.S. men's and women's judo teams and helped select the team's members. Previously, he served as the teams' coach in the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Matsumoto, who has been practicing judo for 34 years, owns a dojo in El Cerrito, Calif. In addition, his 17-year-old daughter is an alternate for the U.S. women's judo team in Sydney.
- Andrew Speight, SFSU music lecturer, performed the alto saxophone during today's opening ceremonies as part of a band of Australian jazz all-stars. Speight, who grew up near Sydney, won Australia's equivalent of a Grammy Award for Best Jazz Album of 1999 for his CD "Andrew Speight Quartet." Speight moved to the United States in 1991 and joined SFSU's acclaimed jazz and world music studies program this fall.
The fourth largest campus in the 23-campus California State University system, SFSU is a highly diverse, comprehensive, public and urban university.
