Behavioral and Social Sciences

Abdiel Onate, History, delivered a paper, "Nation Building in Mexico: the Struggle for the Central Bank," at the Society for Latin American Studies, University of Cambridge, England, April 9.

Jacques L. Hymans, History, was a co-chairperson at the National Summit on Africa Conference held June 4 and 5 in San Francisco. As co-chair, Hymans was involved in developing a nationally shared Plan of Action to guide U.S.-Africa relations in the new millennium. He also presented the paper "Making a Documentary Film on the Career of Leopold Sedar Senghor, Poet/President of Senegal" at the Eight Annual World History Association International Conference in Victoria, British Columbia on June 25. A trailer for the documentary on Senghor, which Hymans produced in collaboration with History graduate students Jeff Edman, Charles Castillo, and Josh Richardson, was also screened at the conference.

JoAnn Aviel, International Relations, co-edited the book "Multilateral Diplomacy and the United Nations Today" which was published by Westview press earlier this year.


Business

Sanjit Sengupta, Marketing, presented a paper at the International Management Development Association’s Eighth World Business Congress on July 1 at the Monterey Institute of International Studies. The paper, "A Dependence-Trust Model of Export Alliance Performance in Small and Medium Enterprises" was co-authored with Murray Silverman and Rick Castaldi from the Department of Management.

Betty J. Blecha, Economics, had her article "Instructional Effectiveness, the Web, and Economics" published in the Fall 1999 issue of the Social Science Computer Review.


Creative Arts

Lewis DeSoto, Art, was one of seven contemporary artists invited by curator Gay Shelton to create a piece for the exhibition, "arborescence," at Paradise Wood Sculpturegrove at the Paradise Ridge Winery in Santa Rosa. The exhibit opened May 16 and will run through this winter.

In August, Richard Festinger, Music, was chosen by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers to receive one of their 1999–2000 ASCAP Awards.

Arthur Asa Berger, BECA, gave a lecture, "Media Criticism" at Peking University on June 16. A Korean translation of his book "Seeing is Believing: An Introduction to Visual Communication" was recently published by MIJN publishers.

Jerry Duke, Dance, gave a lecture, "The Origins of Christianity: A New Name for an Old Belief," to the Forum of the SF Unitarian Church, May 16.


Education

Jesus Contreras, Administration & Interdisciplinary Studies, presented a paper on "The FSMP at San Francisco State University: A Specific Model for Mentorship Programs in the CSU" at the Conference on the Retention of Latino Students in Higher Education held at CSU Dominguez Hills on April 16.

In March, Bryna Rifkind, Elementary Education, was selected to be a member of the Design Team for the new California Formative Assessment & Support System for Teachers.


Ethnic Studies

Joely De La Torre, American Indian Studies, had her paper, "The Power of Political Participation: California Indian Voting Patterns and the New Age of Minority Politics," presented at the Gambling and Gaming: Winner or Losers Conference in Omaha, Nebraska on May 1.

Jose Cuellar, La Raza Studies, gave a public lecture, "On the History of Musica Chicana," sponsored by the Puente Project at Modesto Junior College on May 3.


Health and Human Services

Last May, Erik Peper, Health Education, gave the invited presentations "Breathing for Health" and "Healthy Computing" at the annual meeting of the Biofeedback Society of Arizona. In July, Peper, gave the invited address, "Repiro, la Porta verve la Performance: Raggiungere il Massimo Attraverso il Biofeedback Respiratorio" at the 10th Anniversary Congress of the European Academy of Sports Vision held in Ravenna, Italy, July 4–5.

Vicki Legion, Health Education, addressed the plenary of the state meeting of the California Conference of Local Health Officers, Health Officers Association of California and California Public Health Association—North which took place on May 5. Legion spoke on "Reducing Asthma Through Healthy Environments, the Yes We Can Urban Asthma Partnership."

Vijay Ganji, Dietetics, presented two papers at the California Diatetic Association annual meeting held April 9 in Anaheim, CA: "Nutritional value and sensory properties of tortillas prepared with garbanzo bean flour" and "Serum iron, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium values of pre-menopausal women as affected by psyllium fiber supplementation."

Adam Burke and Erik Peper, Health Education, organized the symposium "Alternative Medicine: Helping the Other 80 Percent" held at the 80th Annual Meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Pacific Division. Burke also presented the paper "Why are people moving to alternative healthcare?" at the event which took place June 22 in San Francisco.

Michale Mayer, Health Education, published the article "Qigong and Hypertension: A Critique of Research" in a recent edition of the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.


Humanities

Christopher Concolino, Foreign Languages, presented two papers: "The Urban Environment and Pirandello’s Literary Space," at the 1999 Annual Convention of the American Association for Italian Studies, Eugene, Oregon on April 16; and "Urban Change and Recent Trends in Italian Cultural Attitudes," at the Museo Italo Americano, at Fort Mason on May 13.

"Health Care and the Ethics of Encounter: A Jewish Discussion of Social Justice," a book by Laurie Zoloth-Dorfman, Jewish Studies, has just been published by the University of North Carolina Press.

Anita Silvers, Philosophy, presented a paper, "Creating Dis/Ability Discourse Through Media Research: Individual Commonalities and Group Difference," at the International Communications Association meeting, May 30 in San Francisco. Silvers also presented the paper "Anomalous and Eclipsed: Feminist Identity Strategy and the Occlusion of Women with Disabilities" at the National Women’s Studies Association convention held June 18 in Albuquerque, NM.


Library

Helene Whitson, Special Collections, received the Governor’s Citation Award in April from the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, San Francisco/Northern California chapter, for her contributions to the preservation of television history in Northern California. Since 1982, Whitson has helped archive and preserve TV film footage donated to SFSU by KQED, KPIX, and KTVU.


Science and Engineering

Joseph Romeo, Center for Biomedical Laboratory Science, published the paper "Limitation of Tat-associated transcriptional processivity in HIV-infected PBMC" in a recent issue of the journal Virology. The paper completed in collaboration with Dr. Melanie Adams and graduate students Christine Wong and Dan Wang.

Dennis Desjardin, Biology, in collaboration with P. Inderbitzin had the paper "A new halotolerant species of Physalacria from Hong Kong" published in Mycologia. Desjardin presented the oral paper "Wild mushrooms: the good, the bad, and the ugly" at the Bohemian Club in San Francisco on April 6.

David Julian and Alissa Arp, Romberg Tiburon Center, along with Francoise Gaill and Charles Fischer presented the paper "Can roots be used for hydrogen sulfide uptake by cold seep vestimentiferans?" at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology meeting held in January in Denver, CO.

On June 29, Eugene Fujinari, Chemistry and Biochemistry, and his colleague Xinwei Yan were granted U.S. Patent 5,916,523 for "Methods for near simultaneous chemiluminescent sulfur and nitrogen detection."

Dan Fendel and Diane Resek, Mathematics, recently had published the fourth textbook in their series "Interactive Mathematics Program: Integrated High School Mathematics." The publisher is Key Curriculum Press. Fendel spoke this summer at the Mexican Academy of Sciences and The Institute of Mathematics of the National University of Mexico on "New Directions in the Teaching of High School Mathematics."


University Advancement

This past June San Francisco State’s Centennial Web site, www.sfsu.edu/l00years, received honorable mention for Web site graphic design in the North Bay Multimedia Association’s "Best New Media Awards" competition. The site was produced by the Publications Office.
