Behavioral & Social Sciences

"From Imperial Gifts to Sex Slaves: Theorizing Symbolic Representations of the 'Comfort Women,'" by C. Sarah Soh, Anthropology, was published in Social Science Japan Journal, Vol. 3, No. 1. Soh presented a paper, "Human Dignity and Sexual Culture," at the ICAS (Institute for Corean-American Studies) Spring Symposium, held May 1 at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Robert Cherny, and William Issel,, History, organized a session on "Society and Politics in the Ne w Deal Era: Right Wing Activism on the Pacific Coast During the 1930s" at the British Association for American Studies, held April 6-9 at the University of Wales, Swansea. The session was based on Cherny's, paper, "The Anti-Communist Network on the Pacific Coast," and Issel's, paper, "Catholic Action on the Political and Cultural Fronts in California." At the European Social Science History Association meeting held April 12-15 at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, Cherny, presente d a paper titled "San Francisco Longshoremen in the 1930s: Age, Ethnicity, Politics, and Union Leadership."

Issel,, along with Lee Davis,, California Studies, and Don Taylor,, Recreation and Leisure Studies, participated in "Presidio Stories: A Visitor Experience and Interpretation Symposium," held April 13-15 at the Presidio.

Martin Meeker,, History, is a co-editor of the book Queer Frontiers: Millennial Geographies, Genders, and Generations, a collection of essays t hat discuss the impact of queer theory on the future of sexuality. The book was published in April by the University of Wisconsin Press.

Jerry Davis,, Geography and Human Environmental Studies, received the 1999 Award for Excellence in Education from the California Geographic Information Association at the California GIS Conference held March 2-3 in Palm Springs.

Bernard Wong,, Anthropology, presented a paper on "Globalization and Citizenship" at the Third International Diaspora Conferen ce held June 2-4 at California Polytechnic University at Pomona.

Business

William Perttula,, Marketing, presented lectures on marketing and Internet marketing at the University of Paris XII on March 27-31. Perttula, also participated on a panel that discussed the "Philosophy of an E-Commerce Course" at the annual conference of the Western Marketing Educators' Association, held April 14 in Lake Tahoe, Nev. Perttula, and Sanjit Sengupta,, Marketing, were among the participants in the Digital Media in Business program, an exclusive training progr am for Finnish business executives held in May and July at Golden Gate University in San Francisco.

Stanley Kowalczyk,, Management, and Michael Pawlish presented a paper on "Relaxing External Perceptions of Organizational Culture and Firm Reputation" at the 4th International Conference on Corporate Reputation, Identity and Competitiveness held May 20 at the Copenhagen Business School in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Creative Arts

"Punch and Judy, Cruikshank and Mayhew" by Joel Schechter,, Theatre Arts, appeared in the Spring issue of Puppetry International.

Jerry Duke,, Dance, served as chair of a panel called "Identity in Motion" at the Dancing in the Millennium conference held in July in Washington, D.C. The panel covered issues of cultural identity through dance movement.

"Drive My Coche," a play written by Roy Conboy,, Theater Arts, was performed June 8-25 at the Actors' Gang in Hollywood. Th e play, which was presented by The Mark Taper Forum's Taper, Too, was adapted from Conboy's solo show.

Education

Penelope Flores,, Secondary Education, delivered the annual address at the Santa Clara Filipino American Employees Convention held May 13 in San Jose. Flores, was also the guest speaker at the University of California, Davis' Graduation Ceremony of Filipino-Americans held June 17.

The second edition of Media and Literacy, co-written by Mary Hamm,, Elementary Education, and Dennis Adams, was published recently by Charles Thomas Publisher.

Carol Langbort,, Elementar y Education, presented a paper on "Developing Teacher-Leaders in a Master's Degree Program in Mathematics Education" at the International Congress of Mathematics Education held in August in Tokyo.

Ethnic Studies

Ruth B. Love,, Administration and Interdisciplinary Studies/Black Studies, was recently appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Pacific Graduate School of Psychology in Menlo Park.

Jose Cuellar,, La Raza Studies/Cesar E. Chavez Institute for Public Policy, received a Distinguished Faculty Award from the Center on Diversity Teaching & Learning in American Higher Education in San Francisco on April 21. "A History of SFSU's La Raza Studies" and "SFSU's La Raza Studies Paradigm: A Multidi mensional Model for Multiethnic Latina/o Education Into 2YK," both written by Cuellar,, were published recently in a special issue of Chicana/o Studies Paradigms: A Journal of Alternative Voices that focused on "Chicana/o Studies: An Academic Odyssey."

Health & Human Services

Susan Higgins, Kinesiology, gave the keynote address, titled "Achieving Curricular Cohesion in a Thematically Constructed Kinesiology Major," at the Annual Invitational Symposium of International Scholars in Sport Science held May 3 at Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Korea.

Bradford C. Bennett,, Kinesiology, presented a three-day workshop on "Transitions in Tai Chi" at the Fifth Annual Chico Tai Chi Retreat held April 28-30 in Chico.

Mi-Sook Kim,, Kinesiology, was selected to re ceive the 2000 Distinguished Dissertation Award from the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology.

At the California State Oriental Medical Association 2000 Convention in San Francisco in April, Adam Burke,, Holistic Healing Studies, presented a paper on "Client Satisfaction and Alternative Medical Care." Burke, also gave a poster session on "Examining the Predictors of Acupuncture Utilization and Customer Satisfaction: A Preliminary Report."

"The Region's Minorities Face Major Risks from Pollution," an opinion piece that appeared in the March 16 edition of the Los Angeles Times, was written by Rachel Morello Frosch,, Health Education.

Bill Michaelis,, Recreation and Leisure Studies, presented a session on "Caretakers of Wonder: A Lighthearted Look at the Power of Play" Jan. 16 at the 18th Annual California Kindergarten Conference held on the SFSU campus. The Game and Play Leader's Handbook: Facilitating Fun and Positive Interaction, writ ten by Michaelis and John M. O'Connell, was published recently by Venture Publishing. The book serves as a guide to how leaders can "get fun to happen" when playing games with children.

The seventh edition of Maternity and Women's Health Care, co-written by Shannon Perry,, Nursing, was published in March. Sherry, also wrote three biographies in the third edition of American Nursing: A Biographical Dictionary, published in February.

Vijay Ganji,, Consumer and Fami ly Studies/Dietetics, presented the paper "Transfatty Acids in Nutrition Labeling: A Review of Scientific Basis" at the Annual American Society for Nutritional Sciences (Experimental Biology), held in April in San Diego. Ganji , also presented several papers at the Annual California Dietetic Association Meeting, held in May in Palm Springs. The papers are: "Wells: Fruit-based Purees Reduce Fat and Energy Without Drastically Affecting Sensory Properties of Brownies," "Incorporation of Ground Flax See d Into Batters: Impact on Nutritional and Physical Properties" and "Calcium Content of Pasta is Improved by Fortifying Semolina with Amaranth Flour, White Bean Flour, Defatted Soyflour and Whey Protein."

Erik Peper,, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, and Albert C. Weijman recently contributed a chapter titled "Healthy Computing" in the book Praktijkbook Gezond Werken, edited by J.A.M. Winnubst and published by Elsevier.

Humanities

Inderpal Grewal,, Women Studies, gave a seminar on a recently published essay titled "Transnational Barbie: Gender and New Consumer Subjects in India" at UC Riverside's Center for Ideas and Society on March 8. On April 12, Grewal, was named the UC Irvine Chancellor's Distinguished Fellow and presented "Feminism, Race, Transnational Practices for a New Millennium."

Christopher Concolino,, Foreign Languages and Literature, presented the paper "Varieties of Temporal Representation i n Rosetta Loy's Le strade di polvere" at the American Association for Italian Studies' annual conference held April 14 in New York.

Minoo Moallem,, Women Studies, delivered a speech titled "Whose Millennium? Religion, Sexuality and the Values of Citizenship" at The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at Columbia University on April 13-14. Moallem's, article, "Universalization of Particulars: The Civic Body and Gendered Citizenship in Iran," appeared in a recent issue of Citizenship Studi es.

Anita Silvers,, Philosophy, presented a paper titled "Democratic Values and Discretionary Latitude: Equalizing Opportunities for Developing Talents" at the American Philosophical Association meeting held April 28 in Chicago. Silvers, presented a paper on "Establishing Shared Perspectives: Research and Intervention as Ethical Challenges" at the National Institute of Health Workshop on Assistive Technology Research and Development in Chicago in June.

Joseph Tuman,, Speech and Communication Studies, recently received the Jacobus ten Broek Excellence in Teaching Award. This award is given annually to a professor at a four-year college or university in Northern California for demonstrating the ability to challenge and inspire students, inculcate sentiments of tolerance and openness, sharpen awareness of the importance of issues of law or public policy, and, promote rigorous critical and analytical thought and debate pertaining to matters of conscience, personal liberties and civil liberties.

Rachelle Waksler,, English, presented the paper "A HELLA New Specifier in San Franc isco" at the annual meeting of the International Linguistics Association held April 8 at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.

Loretta Stec,, English, presented the paper "Interwar Journalism of Naomi Mitchison and Rebecca West" at the Constructing Literature and Culture 1914-15 conference held May 18-20 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.

Lu Rehling,, Technical and Professional Writing, gave a speech on "The Academic Edge for Tech Communication Professionals" at the San Francisco Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication on July 19.

Library

"Working Toward Scalable Instruction: Creating the RIO Tutorial at the University of Arizona Library" by Jeff Rosen,, Library, with Laura Bender, University of Arizona, was published in a recent issue of Research Strategies.

Science and Engineering

Peter T. Palmer,, Chemistry and Biochemistry, is one of 65 recipients of the Arch T. Colwell Merit Award, which is granted annually by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to recognize excellence of content and presentation of a technical paper. Palmer, was honored March 7 for his paper on "Direct Sampling Ion Trap Mass Spectrometry ; A Growing Toolkit for Air Quality Monitoring Applications," presented at SAE's 1998 International Conferen ce on Environmental Systems.

"Structural Design for Passive Seismic Control Utilization" by W.S. Pong,, Engineering, appeared in the May issue of CTBUH Review, which is published by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. Pong, also delivered a presentation on "Seismic Utilization and Design for Microsoft Data Center" at the Third International Conference on Behavior of Steel Structures in Seismic Area held Aug. 21-24 in Montreal.

"Diatomaceous Sediments from the Miocene Monter ey Formation, California: A Lamina-scale Investigation of Biological, Ecological and Sedimentary Processes," by Lisa White,, Geosciences, Alice Chang and Kurt Grimm, received the 1998 Outstanding Paper Award in the journal Palaios by the Society for Sedimentary Geology (SEPM). They received the award at the 2000 SEPM Annual Awards Ceremony in New Orleans on April 18.

Eugene Fujinari,, College of Science and Engineering, gave a poster session on "Chemistry Education in the 21st Century" at t he American Chemical Society National Meeting in San Francisco on March 26. A poster co-written by Fujinari, on "Online Lab Tips for the Second-Semester Organic Chemistry Laboratory Course" was presented at the American Chemical Society National Meeting held Aug. 20-24 in Washington, D.C.

David Mustart,, Geosciences, with co-author Matthew Horrigan, presented a paper on "Hydrothermal Pipes in Six Granitic Plutons in California: Evidence for Evolution and Migration of a Magmatic Volatile Ph ase" at the Geological Society of America Cordilleran Section Meeting held April 27-29 in Vancouver, British Columbia.
