Behavioral & Social Sciences

Don Mar, Economics, presented "Discrimination among Asian American Professionals: A Regional Examination of Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino Men" at the Western Regional Science Association Meeting held Feb. 26-March 1 in Kauai, Hawaii.

"Heterogeneity of Variance in Clinical Data," a statistical methodology article written by Robert J. Grissom, Psychology, appeared in the February issue of the Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology.

Three members from the Department of International Relations were on the program of the annual conference of the International Studies Association held March 15-18 in Los Angeles: JoAnn Aviel presented "The Role of NGO's in Transitional Regimes: El Salvador and Guatemala;" Sanjoy Banerjee was the discussant for the panel "Constructivist Approaches to Foreign Policy Analysis;" and Raymond Miller presented "Globalization: Friedman vs. Greider and the Soros Connection: Hayek and Pol anyi Revisited."

Business

Stanley J. Kowalczyk, Management, presented the paper, "Reputation and Organizational Culture in Silicon Valley Firms" at the Western Academy of Management meeting held April 7 in Kona, Hawaii. >Whitney Chadwick, Art, presented a lecture and received the 2000 Alumni Achievement Award in Art History at the College of Arts and Architecture Spring Awards Convocation held in April at Penn State University.

"Lacan and Claudel's Crusts: The Thematic of the Father" by Mohammad Kowsar, Theatre Arts, appeared in the March issue of Mosaic.

Creative Arts

Whitney Chadwick, Art, presented a lecture and received the 2000 Alumni Achievement Award in Art History at the College of Arts and Architecture Spring Awards Convocation held in April at Penn State University.

"Lacan and Claudel's Crusts: The Thematic of the Father" by Mohammad Kowsar, Theatre Arts, appeared in the March issue of Mosaic.

Education

Judith Blomberg, Secondary Education, presented "Gender Role Socialization and Its Relation to Cognitive and Affective Skill Development in the Middle School Student" at the California League of Middle Schools annual conference held March 11 in San Francisco.

The Middle Level Emphasis Credential Program, Secondary Education, was selected by the Philadelphia Education Fund as one of four exemplary models of teacher preparation of teachers of early adolescents. The four model programs are featured in a report entitled The Preparation of Middle Grades Teachers in an Era of High Stakes and High Standards: Philadelphia's Predicament. Marvin Silverman initiated the program in 1989. Judith Blomberg currently coordinates it.

Ethnic Studies

Joely De La Torre, American Indian Studies, presented "Community Service Learning in American Indian Studies: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Practice" at the National Association of Native American Studies meeting held Feb. 22 in Houston, Texas.

On April 1, the Chicano & Latino Studies Department of CSU Long Beach presented Jose Cuellar, La Raza Studies, with a Certificate of Achievement for leadership and contributions to the Chicano/Latino community.

Health & Human Services

Adam Burke and Erik Peper, Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, presented the paper, "Repetitive Motion Injury among Youth," at the Association for Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback annual conference held March 29-April 2 in Denver, Colo. Peper also presented "Practical Applications of Biofeedback with Elite Performers" and "Use of Imagery with College Students." Burke gave the keynote address, "Holistic Approaches to Healthy Aging," at the University of New Eng land Mind/Body Healing conference held April 7 in Biddeford, Maine.

Humanities

Hillary and Soon-Yi Shop for Ties, a play by Michelle Carter, Creative Writing, opened the season (October, 1999) at the Magic Theatre and sold out during its extended run. At a ceremony on Jan. 31 in Los Angeles, Carter received Dramalogue's Garland Award for Best Play in the West in 1999.

The fourth edition of the best-selling textbook Photojournalism: The Professionals' Approach by Kenneth Kobre, Journalism, has been recently published by Focus Press. This extensively revised and reorganized edition contains many features, including an updated digital imaging chapter and a new chapter on covering issues.

Anita Silvers, Philosophy, co-authored an article on "Disability Rights Today: How Far Have We Come?" that appeared in the winter issue of Human Rights, a publication of the American Bar Association.

M.J. Lunine, Humanities, spoke at the Commonwealth Club on "India Revisited After 40 Years: Are There Still Grounds for Hope?" on March 23 in San Francisco.

"Doing Good While Doing Well: Service Learning Internships," an article by Lu Rehling, Technical and Professional Writing, appears in the March issue of the Business Communication Quarterly.

The 3rd edition of Our Voices: Essays in Culture, Ethnicity, and Communication co-edited by Victoria Chen, Speech & Communication Studies (with Alberto Gonzalez and Marsha Houston), was recently published by Roxbury Publishing.
