Behavioral & Social Sciences

C. Sarah Soh, Anthropology, presented a paper on "The Movement for the 'Comfort Women' Survivors"to the Quest for Justice Panel on Korean "Comfort Women"at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley on Nov. 14, 2000.

Past Time: Baseball as History (Oxford University Press, 2000), by Jules Tygiel, History, was named a Notable Book of the Year by the New York Times Book Review. "The Polo Grounds,"an article written by Tygiel, was published in American Places: Encounters With History (Oxford University Press, 2000), a collection of articles by America's leading historians.

Raymond Miller, International Relations/Social Science, presented a paper on "Developing an Instrument for Assessing Interdisciplinary Education"at the annual conference of the Association for Integrative Studies held Oct. 6-8, 2000, in Portland, Ore. Miller also presented a paper on "The Ebbs and Flows of Internationalizing the Curriculum at San Francisco State University"at the annual conference of the Association for General and Liberal Studies held Nov. 2-4, 2000, in Chicago.


Business

The Internet: The Soul of Democracy,"a speech by Gary Selnow, Business Analysis and Computing Systems, was published in a recent issue of Vital Speeches of the Day. His speech was originally delivered Oct. 3, 2000, to the Department of State Office of International Information Programs NetDiplomacy 2000 in Washington, D.C.


Creative Arts

"The Meanings of Culture,"an essay by Arthur Asa Berger, Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts, was recently published in the Australian Internet e-journal Media/Culture. The following books written by Berger were published in recent months: Media and Communication Research: An Introduction to Qualitative and Quantitative Approaches (Sage Publications); Ads, Fads and Consumer Culture: Advertising's Impact on American Character and Society (Rowman and Littlefield); Jewish Jes ters: A Study in American Comedy (Hampton Press); Die Laughing (IUniverse.com); and Is it ADD?, co-written with Dr. Isaac Silberman (IUniverse.com).

Chitresh Das, Dance, presented a lecture/demonstration on "Sound and Motion as Human Unifiers"for the Graduate Theological Union on Nov. 1, 2000.

Albirda Rose,Dance, received the Ruth Beckford Award forExtraordinary People in the Field of Dance from the Citicentre Dance Theatre in Oakland on Jan. 26.

Carolynn Lindeman, Music, was recently appointed by President Bill Clinton to the President's Advisory Committee on the Arts of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Jerry Duke, Dance, presented a lecture on "Folk Dance and Religious Ritual"at the International Kolo Festival held Nov. 25, 2000, in San Francisco.

The Theatre Arts department's production of "M. Butterfly,"directed by Yukihiro Goto, was performed at The Kennedy Center/American College Theater Festival Region VIII "Festival of Scenes"on Jan. 30 at CSU-Fresno. Ten schools were chosen from the approximately 200 plays entered in this year's festival.


Education

Judy Kysch, Secondary Education, recently received the 1999-2000 James H. Meyer Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Penelope Flores, Secondary Education, wrote articles on "Sibling Hierarchy"and "There's a Rooster in my Chair"in the August 2000 and September 2000 issues of Filipinas magazine, respectively.

Judith Blomberg, Secondary Education, presented a research-based workshop on "The Development of Healthy Self-Concepts in Middle School Girls and Boys: The Educational Implications of Recent Research"at the 27th Annual Conference of the National Middle School Association held Nov. 2, 2000, in St. Louis.

Kate Kinsella, Secondary Education, conducted an institute titled "Support for Secondary Educators Who Strive to be Content Literacy Mentors"at the National League of High Schools held Nov. 10, 2000, in Universal City. Kinsella also conducted two featured secondary-level sessions titled "Secondary Inservice Reading Training: Doing it Right"and "Out with Halloween Haiku: In with Expository Writing"at the California Reading Association Conference held Nov. 2-4, 2000, in San Jose.


Ethnic Studies

"Summers With You," a poem dedicated to "Angie 1897-1976," written by Dorothy Tsuruta, Black Studies, recently placed honorable mention in the Detroit Writers' Guild's annual Paul Lawrence Dunbar Poetry Contest. Tsuruta's poem was also published in the November 2000 edition of the Detroit Writers' Guild Chapbook.

Jose B. Cuellar, La Raza Studies, gave a lecture on "Loco-Motion Rhythms and Flavors in New Chicano Music," on Oct. 31 as part of the Visions From The Heart Series sponsored by the Department of Chicano Studies at UC Santa Barbara. Cuellar also presented a keynote lecture titled "The Impact of Alcohol in Latino Communities" on Nov. 5 at the General Session of Oregon's 17th Annual Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs Prevention Conference, "Year 2000: A Ton of Prevention."

Eric Mar, Asian American Studies, was elected to the San Francisco Unified School District Board of Education in last month's election.


Health and Human Services

Susan Stark, Consumer & Family Studies/Dietetics, presented a juried design titled "Contradictions"at the November 2000 meeting of the International Textiles and Apparel Associationin Cincinnati.

Mi-Sook Kim, Kinesiology, presented a paper on "Coping Research in Sport: Measurement and Conceptual Issues"at the meeting of the Association for the Advancement of Applied Sport Psychology (AAASP) held Oct. 17-22, 2000, in Nashville, Tenn. Kim also co-presented "Examination of the Psychometric Properties of the Spanish Version of the Approach to Coping In Sport Questionnaire (ACSQ)"with J.L. Duda, I. Tomas and I. Balaguer at the AAASP meeting.

The Game and Play Leader's Handbook: Facilitating Fun and Positive Interaction (Venture Publishing), written by Bill Michaelis, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and John M. O'Connell, received a favorable review in the Fall 2000 Journal of Park and Recreation Administration.

Erik Peper, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, presented a lecture on "Interventions: Psychophysiological Approach"at the Meeting on Biobehavorial Mechanisms of Work-related Upper Extremity Disorders, sponsored by the Office Ergonomics Research Committee, held Nov. 7, 2000, in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. Peper presented a paper titled "Drop and Breathe!!!"at the 26th annual conference of the Biofeedback Society of California held Nov. 11, 2000, in Monterey.

Howard Moffet, Institute for Holistic Healing Studies/Health Education, was recently appointed by Gov. Gray Davis to the Acupuncture Board.

On behalf of the YES WE CAN Urban Asthma Partnership, Mary Beth Love, Health Education, gave a presentation on "Community Health Workers and Urban Asthma"at the American Public Health Association conference held Nov. 14-17, 2000, in Boston. Emma Sanchez, Health Education, presented papers on "Balancing Health Disparities, Social Inequalities and Structural Inequities"and "Balancing Power: A Freirian Model Addressing Root Causes of Substance Abuse"at the American Public Health Association conferen ce.

Vicki Legion, Community Health Works of San Francisco/Health Education, and Dierdra Epps-Miller, Health Education, gave plenary presentations on the YES WE CAN Urban Asthma Partnership at the American College of Chest Physicians Asthma Coalitions Conference held Oct. 25, 2000. Legion and Epps-Miller also gave presentations on YES WE CAN at a national think tank sponsored by Kaiser and the American Lung Association held Nov. 16, 2000, in Washington, D.C.

Salvador Chavez, Counseling/Counseling and Psychological Services; Mary Cavagnaro, Counseling/Counseling and Psychological Services; Cezanne Tocchini, Counseling; and Penelope Warren, Counseling and Psychological Services, conducted a workshop titled "Evolution of the Supervisor: Becoming Oneself in the Supervisory Role"at the convention of the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision held Nov. 11, 2000, in Los Gatos.

The American Journal of Nursing has selected the seventh edition of Maternity and Women's Health Care - written by Shannon Perry, Nursing; Irene Bobak, Nursing; and Deitra Lowdermilk - as a Book of the Year. Amy Nichols, Nursing, and Elizabeth Whalley, English, each contributed a chapter to the book. Irene Gonzales, Nursing, served as a consultant.


Humanities

Not For Sale: In Defense of Public Goods, an anthology co-edited by Milton Fisk, Nancy Holmstrom, and Antole Anton, Philosophy, was published in November 2000 by Westview Press. Anton's paper titled "Public Goods as Commonstock: Notes on the Receding Commons"is included in the anthology, as well as "Human Rights Versus Classical Liberalism: A Study in the Theory of Value"by Jim Syfers, Philosophy; "Voting, Democratic Political Action and the Public Good,"by Kurt Nutting, Philosophy; and "Language as a Public Good Under Threat: The Private Ownership of Brand Names,"by Michael Goldhaber, NEXA.

Anita Silvers, Philosophy, presented a lecture on "Clearing the Cobwebs From Criticism: Toward Redeeming the Legacy of Monroe Beardsley,"at the American Society of Aesthetics Annual Meeting held Oct. 28, 2000, in Reno, Nev. Silvers presented a lecture titled "Can the Supreme Court Disable Congress?: Retrogressive Logic in Constitutional Classifcation,"at the Radical Philosophy Association Biennial Meeting held on Nov. 2, 2000, in Chicago.

Victoria Chen, Speech and Communication Studies, presented papers on "Transnational Dialogue Through Popular Culture: An Overview"and "A Meditation on Buddhism and Social Constructionism"(co-written by J. Shailor) at the National Communiction Association Convention held in November 2000 in Seattle.

Lu Rehling, Technical and Professional Writing, received an APCC Service Certificate for Outstanding Service and Excellence in Training Award at the Association of Professional Communication Consultants (APCC) conference held in November 2000 in Atlanta.


Science and Engineering

Troy Boone, Biology, presented a paper on "Integrated Urban Agriculture Systems as a Means of Bypassing Persistent Organic Pollutants"at the American Public Health Association conference held Nov. 14-17, 2000, in Boston.


Student Affairs

Michael Ritter, Counseling and Psychological Services, presented "American College Students in 2000: Population at Risk"and "High Tourist Areas Lack Visible HIV/AIDS Prevention Information"at the 13th International AIDS Conference 2000 held in July 2000 in Durban, South Africa.
