Behavioral and Social Sciences

Robert W. Cherny, History, wrote an essay on Harry Bridges for the November issue of California Journal, one of 30 essays that the editors commissioned to mark the journal's 30th anniversary by analyzing the 30 Californians who had the greatest influence on state politics in the 20th century. On Nov. 4, Cherny presented the lecture ''Greeting the New Century: Californians in 1900'' at the California Historical Society as part of the opening of a new exhibit.

JoAnn Aviel, International Relations, chaired a panel on the United Nations at the American Political Science Association conference held last September in Atlanta, Ga. In September, Aviel also presented a paper on El Salvador and Guatemala at a workshop sponsored by the International Studies Association on NGOs and the Rule of Law in Transitional Societies.

On Oct. 9, Bernard Wong, Anthropology, presented the paper ''The Informal Economy within the Formal Economy: Business Practices in the Enclave Enterprise of Chinese Immigrants'' at the Conference on Immigrant Businesses in the Informal Economy held at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

Business

Ronald E. Purser, Management, presented the paper ''Cyberspace and Its Limits'' at the International Jean Gebser Society annual conference held Oct. 22 in Chicago, Ill. His article ''The role of management in a self-managing organization'' recently appeared in the National Productivity Review, and a book chapter, ''Search Conferencing: Accelerating Large-Scale Strategic Planning'' appears in ''Fast Cycle Organization Development.''


Creative Arts

In November, Joshua Habermann, Music, joined other singers from across the world and the International Bach Akademie of Stuttgart to perform Johannes Brahms' ''Requiem,'' under the direction of Helmuth Rilling. The two-week tour included concerts in France, Switzerland, Germany, and Belgium.

Hamid Khani, BECA, presented at the California Community College Association conference held in October in San Diego. The lecture was titled ''Utilizing Multimedia to Connect with High Schools and the Community.''

Chitresh Das, Dance, presented a lecture/demonstration and performance at the World Music Dance Institute on Oct. 22 and 23, in Boston, Mass., and for the Multi-Cultural Dance Organization on Oct. 29 and 30 in Toronto, Canada.

Wan-Lee Cheng, Design and Industry, gave a keynote speech at the Art, Humanity, and Technology International Design Conference held Oct. 30-31 in Taiwan. His speech was titled ''Portable Document Format--the Universal Document Communication Technology.''

''Recumbent,'' an art installation by Lewis deSoto, Art, was exhibited recently by the Bill Maynes Gallery in New York. The installation consisted of five works by the sculptor along with sound, light and video, designed as a tribute to deSoto's recently deceased father.


Ethnic Studies

Dorothy Tsuruta, Black Studies, presented the paper ''Charlotte Forten Grimke: Maturity Reflective of a Mind'' at the Midwest Modern Language Association annual convention held Nov. 4 in Minneapolis, Minn.


Health and Human Services

Vicki Legion, Health Education, gave a presentation on the ''Yes We Can'' model for preventing and managing asthma in low income urban communities at the Best Practices in Pediatric Asthma conference of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology held Oct. 23 in Washington D.C.

Bill Michaelis, Recreation & Leisure Studies, gave the Saturday keynote address at the School-Age Care: That was Then, This is Now conference held Nov. 5-6 in Basking Ridge, N.J. His talk was titled ''Laugh and Level with Me: The Power of Play and Humor in Our Leadership Lives.'' He presented ''Laugh and Level with Me: Breaking Barriers, Tightening Teams and Cultivating Caring, Cooperative Communication'' at the annual conference of the Association of California School Administrators held Nov 11-13 in Anaheim.

Vijay Ganji, Consumer & Family Studies/Dietetics, presented two papers at the annual meeting of the American Dietetic Association held Oct. 17-21 in Atlanta, Ga: ''Evaluation of Acesulfame-K in reduced-fat brownies'' and ''Use of seed gums in low-fat ground pork: Effect on physical and sensory characteristics.''

Tim McGarry, Kinesiology, presented a paper titled ''On the refractoriness of a fast movement'' at the 30th Annual Canadian Society for Psychomotor Learning and Sport Psychology Conference held in October in Edmonton, Canada.

Steve Wallace, Kinesiology, presented the paper ''Precision grip force in the anatomical and prosthetic limb during a bimanual loading task'' at the Society for Neuroscience Annual Conference, Oct. 28, Miami, Fla.

Susan Zieff, Kinesiology, presented the paper ''Sporting Practices and Perspectives of Female High School Athletes of Various Ethnic Groups in One Urban Context'' at the 20th annual meeting of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport, Nov. 3-6, Cleveland, Ohio.

Robyn Lock, Kinesiology, presented back to back sessions at the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) Teacher Education Conference, held Oct. 15 in Bloomingdale, Ill. She was part of the California Physical Education-Health Project presentation on a subject matter grant that focuses on teacher professional development. Also, she presented a paper titled ''Embodied Knowledge and Understanding: Moving Beyond Typical Physical Education Curriculum and Instruction in Elementary Schools'' at the 25th annual fall conference of the American Educational Research Association Special Interest Group: Research on Women and Education, Oct. 23, New York, N.Y.

Allen Abraham, Kinesiology, served as a panelist during a recent presentation on ''Eliminating Socially Demeaning Behavior (Violence) in Physical Education and Athletics'' at the Fall California Association for Health, Physical Education and Dance Conference, Oct. 17-19 in Sacramento.

Frank Verducci, Kinesiology, presented a paper titled ''Interval Cryotherapy and Increased Work, Velocity and Power'' at the Fifth International Olympic Committee's World Congress on Sport Sciences, Nov. 3, Australia.

Humanities

Manfred Wolf, English, gave a talk at City College of San Francisco in October on ''Essay Writing.'' ''The Dance School,'' an excerpt from his memoir, was published in October in the Beacon Press book, ''Best of 1999.'' A review-essay of Callaloo, a journal devoted to West Indian issues, appeared in the publication of the American Association of Netherlandic Studies in April. ''This Time, This Place,'' a monthly column by Wolf, appears in the West Portal Monthly, a newspaper distributed in parts of San Francisco.

Laurie Zoloth, Jewish Studies, was co-editor (with Dena S. Davis) of the book, ''Notes from a Narrow Ridge: Religion and Bioethics,'' University Press Publishing. An essay, ''The Promises of Exiles: A Jewish Theology of Responsibility,'' appears in the book ''Vision of a New Earth: Religious Pespectives on Population, Consumption, and Ecology,'' edited by Harold Coward and Daniel Maguire, State University of New York Press.


Science and Engineering

''Unbounded Foundation Effects on Seismic Response of Structures with Passive Control'' by Wenshen Pong, Engineering, along with Chong-Shien Tsai and Ching-Shyang Chen appears in the Proceedings of the 1999 Structural Engineers Association of California Convention, which was held Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Santa Barbara.

Scott Gronert, Chemistry, contributed ''Coulomb Repulsion in Multiply Charged Ions: A Computational Study of the Effective Dialectric Constants of Organic Spacer Groups'' to the International Journal of Mass Spectrometry. ''Reactions of Gas Phase Salts: Substitutions and Eliminations in Complexes Containing a Dianion and a Tetraalklylammonium Cation'' with J. Azebu appears in Organic Letters.

''Behavioral Issues of Rationality in International Interaction: A Game Theoretic Analysis'' by Jean-Pierre Langlois, Mathematics, appears in the Journal of Conflict Resolution.

Ralph Larson, Biology, and Richard Julian's paper ''Spatial and temporal genetic patchiness in marine populations and its implications for fisheries management'' was recently published in California Cooperative Fisheries Investigations Reports.
